Need advice on PSU

Hi everyone, my Cooler Master 550w PSU just died. Bought it for $95 in Jan 2021, thus able to claim warranty.
But there is no stock, so distributor offered me the Cooler Master V GOLD V2 650 FULL MODULAR PSU but I need to top up $70 for it. But warranty for this PSU will end in Jan 2026.

What would be the advice if I want a full modular PSU?
Should I top up a bit more to get a PSU that times with 5 years warranty?

The V2 retails for around S$180 so your 3 year old PSU (assume working) + 3 years worth of warranty is valued at S$110.

Looks like a good deal to upgrade if you are getting a new V2 even with the 2 years warranty.

As to whether to top up for an additional 3 years warranty, depends on the amount.

honestly I do not support the top up to RMA upgrade which should replace is not take time to fix it.

not a great psu. i would opt for a seasonic core gm550 for $70 with 7yrs warranty, even though it is lower power it is a decent unit and its warranty should last longer than the offered replacement psu. ts was already running 550w in the first place anyway.

pct has asus rog strix 750w for about the same price, is basically a rebranded seasonic focus and is what id go to especially for its 10y warranty vs superflower 5y.

I assume the one you brought is the Cooler master MVE 550 watt?

Upgrading to the Cooler Master V GOLD V2 650 FULL MODULAR PSU is a good option.

Is not just for the modular cable but more expensive PSU.
It will have better components and higher energy efficiency than cheaper bronze PSU.
The decision is up to you, you think not worth to top.

Than just send in that PSU and wait for replacement can take few months.

$70 for for 3 years warranty? If the distro require top up, the waranty should be extended for at least 5 years, otherwise what's the pont of warranty? you'll paying the original + $70 for A 650W PSU with only 5 years of warranty. The V2 650W is $159~$169 with 10 years of warranty. $95 + $70 is $165, You are not only overpaying but also warranty cut by 5 years.

My RMA experience with Cosair for HX620/HX520 was top up less than $50/$35(IIRC) and warranty exnteded for 5 years--they were 7 years warranty when buy new. Another RMA for AX860 was replaced with RM850X with no top up, warranty follow AX860.

I would say Convergent did a greast RMA service for me so all my 6 systems are using Corsair RMx. Recently bought the RM650 for $142 from Bizgram, a short PSU by ATX standard and I believe the warranty is 10 years according to Corsair webpage. This is also Top tier PSU, as good as RMx without premium Janpanese capacitors, and no capacitor in cables--good or bad depends on user.

Technically, it's not a bad deal. Only down side is, the replacement PSU actually comes with 10yrs warranty but it's now reduce to < 5 yrs in your case.

if trade up, the warranty period should have been the same as normal retail sale.

edit: why ppl say 3 years? now 2024, 1 year later 2025, 2 years later 2026.... 2 years warranty very bad deal especially when need top up $70.

Not worth. Just demand them to repair it as it is still under warranty or replace with equivalent.

Used to had a CM V650 but only last me 3yrs after that no more trust CM . Now my Superflower 750 leadex already 5yrs still going strong , but if only $70 actually ok to gamble

Take @Koenig168 advise, left over warranty from old psu is enough as a trial period.​

This replacement psu should be reliable enough to last. Paid to extend warranty only if it's a giveaway price.​

70 bucks is half the price of a new and decent 650 to 750W PSU price. If they want you to pay extra to replace a faulty PSU, then I expect same warranty duration as a new set. Ultimately, it’s your call. May be you should ask if you don’t want to top up, are they going to reimburse you somehow. After all, their product failed during warranty period, and they don’t have a replacement for you that does not require top up.
