So my rig is about 6years++ old and my PC has been shutting down when heavier usage.. gradually the definition of "heavy" keeps dropping, the day before I think the rig menopause so like from playing a single game would shut down the PC to now just a video eg. YouTube would shut it down.

I assume it's the PSU?

So with a 6years++ rig, what would you guys recommend?

1) get a 2nd hand psu and tong awhile more then whack a new PC
2) get a new PSU, next time build a new PC just use this PSU (and re-use whichever parts I can)
3) just whack a new PC, since rig is already 6-7 years bound to up car soon

:s11: sadly missed out on the 1111 deals etc.

Is the F0rt4n guy still around? Also I remember there was some hwz user that sells assembled rig right? I remember seeing some webpage/carousell

edit: https://forums.tomshardware.com/thr...i-play-games-for-a-couple-of-minutes.3662275/
This if my PC problem, if any of y'all know what's the issue please let me know :(

May I know if the temperature heat up before shut down?

It could be the cpu and it's cooling issue as well as motherboard matter.

Do you OC? If yes can try to revert all OC setting check for stability?

Also try swapping RAM slot 1 by 1 to check could be possible ram slot spoiled too.

I didn't check the temperature, I put my hands over it it's not even remotely hot tho, so I assume it's not the temp

I don't OC, I use the default settings so I think it's not OC

Ahh true, I thought it could be the ram issue!
So I try to run the Windows Memory Diagnostic to see if it's the cause of a faulty ram however I've tried running it a couple of times and like when it's completing or when it completed the screen just went back and the computer just kinda halt, waited a couple of minutes but it didn't boot back up, I've tried doing it a couple of times but sometimes like 80-90% it just went black screen. There aren't any errors shown from the RAM.

Maybe it's still safer to do the ram slot 1 by 1 and see~ Lemme go test that

Try to go into BIOS and see how long it can last will also be able to tell whether if could possibly be one of the hardware failure.

If in BIOS no shut down issue then it's possible that it is the software issue by Windows

I'm able to use the PC still tho, as long as it's just browser and surfing with no .gif or videos LOL

As long as there's a video, it'll get shut down soon, depends on its mood
Eg. Games too, sometimes it lasts a couple of minutes, sometimes a couple of seconds

Imma try the Ram thingy in a bit and the BIOS one

suspect is CPU or GPU overheat.
please open up your casing and look at the dust on your fan and heat sink.

Icic, seems GPU could be the main reasons, you can also try to use your motherboard display/hdmi to test if the video issue happen.

Could be psu issues causing the shut down. Can never know unless you swap to another psu. Can also be loose ram or faulty ram. Or can also be a faulty motherboard or gpu. Seems like the problem will occur when the gpu clock starts to ram up so it could be a faulty gpu as well.

I guess the simplest thing you can try now is to reseat your ram or try using a single stick of ram to see if problem persist. Clean off all the dust inside your pc i.e dust filter etc.

Try taking out your r9 290 and use your igpu onboard graphics to see if it fixes the issue. As the gpu clock speeds gets ram up when you start to game or browse videos on the browser a faulty gpu can shut down a pc or cause weird artifact screen issues. (Encountered before).

Can also try disabling this software msi Killer Network Manager as you have said this has pop up before the pc shut down.

If after trying out these easy steps and still cannot solve the problem, then the next step for you is to swap to a working psu, or a working motherboard to fix the problem.

I would say your i7 4790k is still a great rig for gaming and productivity workload. If can should try to get it fix if possible. Can save alot of $$$ if you can get it fix. Or just sell the entire pc and buy a new rig. Trade off is that you will have to spend more money getting a new ryzen rig but good thing is that you don't need to bother fixing this pc.

I would say you should try and get it fix first as buying a new ryzen rig can be expensive. It's your call its your wallet after all.

Just did that to double check, the fan all seems to be pretty clean, awhile ago there seems to be this issue but on a smaller scale eg when I really open a lot of stuff then it'll get shut down so I cleaned all the fan not too long ago.

However for the heat sink I didn't clean it as idk how to, seems like there's more problems to the rig than I expected :o

While running I just realised the fan below the heatsink wasn't spinning, I manually touched it for abit then it starts to spin. The plate above the heatsink idk what's it called but it's so hot when I touch it I think I could cook an egg & maybe a sausage.

How to do I do this? Sorry not that tech-savvy..
However by luck I could still run games tho, like while I was testing out the 1 ram 2 ram thingy as suggested by y'all. I could still run NBA 2K21 till like 1-2 minute mark then I get that error and shut down again.

Yeah I'm suspecting it's PSU based on all the things I google and sometimes the tiaktiaktiak sound and how it's like menses sometimes will shutdown sometimes won't.

True like the other guy Yongkit said, perhaps it could be GPU but depends on my rig's mood sometimes I could run the game 5-10 minutes and now it's just even a youtube video could it down at N-duration depending on its mood.. :(
The day before it was just running fine I could even run multiple instance of it with other stuffs and browser.

Just did the ram thingy and it's fine it could both run on 1 stick alone and it shows up the number of ram on properties just fine, did the Windows Memory Diagnostic and doesn't seem to have any issue with the ram..

Imma try clean up all the dust thingy one more time along with the dust filter etc.. if it still persist then

- Take out r9 and use igpu onboard graphics
- Disable the msi software
- Else it's probably a new PSU and see if it'll fix
-Else it's probably a new motherboard and see if it'll fix

Think it'l be hard to sell the rig tho, where do you suggest? Carousell?

How much would a ryzen rig cost on average? or like the cheapest

Sounds like cpu overheat due to the thermal paste drying out or something.

The thermal paste needs to be changed every two or three years. By now, definitely dried up. I have a bunch of Corsair AIOs and they are quite easy to remove from the CPU so should be simple for you to change the thermal paste.

You might also want to check whether the AIO pump is dead. Take a look at the RPM or flow rate for the connector (from the BIOS).

The i7-4790K runs very hot so if the AIO is not working properly, no surprise that the PC will shut down.

Oh yeah, please uninstall the Killer LAN software. I had both the MSI Z97 GD65 and the MSI Z97A Gaming 7 and that software is known to be problematic. You can just download the LAN drivers from MSI website and install that.

Damn, while I was clearing dusts from the heat sink/fan etc I realized the two fans below aren't really spinning properly too LOL that's the GPU right?

Ah, I didn't do anything to it since 2014 (when I got the rig)
Is there any place to purchase thermal paste instead of Sim Lim? Or just go to any PC repair shop?

Imma go check if the AIO pump is dead now

At this point I feel like the 6 years old rig is almost at its last leg LOL

- Check your PC temperature
Use HWinfo
https://www.hwinfo.com/download/
- Clean all the fans especially CPU fan.
Sometimes visibly you cannot see any dust especially CPF fan.
When you dismantle it and clean it than there are lots of dust.
- Reapply thermal paste for CPU
- Update motherboard BIOS if you have not done before.
- Check under device manager any hardware have warning icon

If you feel hassle to do maintenance, you can bring to a repair
shop do it for you.
To me I don't it is PSU issue especially if it can turn on.

If PC cannot turn on or after you switch on than suddenly turn
off than PSU is faulty.
During heavy usage like gaming than shutdown usually is either
overheat due to dust or faulty components like RAM or GPU.

Now there's like a 20-40% chance when I turn on my PC, all the sound woof woof eg. the fan and all and it just stay there never turn on till, I need to switch off and on (sometimes up to a couple of times) until it can turn on :/ That's why I suspect perhaps PSU.

I think the fans kinda clean alr, just went through them again kinda decent.

I'll try the pc temperature thingy! https://www.hwinfo.com/download/

edit: https://imgur.com/a/hIDr1t2 <--- did it, not sure how to see if there's anything wrong with it tho

I'll reapply the thermal paste thingy, guess I'll make sure to do it every 2 years now :/ didn't do it before LOL

Imma try to update the bios if I can get my hands on a usb

Device Manager pretty good, 0 warning Icons

yup, AIO pump is working so that is not the problem. That leaves changing the thermal paste.

Ooo, alrighty Imma get my hands on a thermal paste and see if it could help!

The com has been operating for 2-3 hours as long as I don't open any video/games

- - - -
Things left to try as suggested by y'all

- Take out r9 and use igpu onboard graphics
- Disable the msi software
- Different PSU and see if it'll fix
- Different motherboard and see if it'll fix
- Reapply thermal paste for CPU
- Update motherboard BIOS if you have not done before
- Bring to repair/maintenance shop
- Sell old rig and get a new rig (Would those custom aftershock PC be decent value wise? Compare to getting a rig recommendation here. Since it comes assembled which is pretty neat, I'm clueless regarding that)

Tried a couple of them and still can't find the culprit

Haven't tried switching a PSU,
update BIOS
and also reapply thermal paste though

recently my old rig (intel 4770) was giving some shut down issues too. the main culprit is cpu overheating as it is a 7 years rig. and after i changed the PSU a year ago i forgot to plug in the front case fan haha. so i bought a new stock intel cooler, reapply the thermal paste, dust the whole PC, reconnect all the fans and now it works like a charm. but i already done up a new rig before i did all this lol
