allows for testing of already-opened ram sticks before buying a new one?

i'm not sure whether my alienware m14x can support up to 8gb x 2 so before i buy, i'd want to test it out if the shop has sticks lying around which have been opened.

does anyone know?

for my case, M14xR1 as follows:

dell support forum and dell website, spare parts say 8gb max
users have reported that 16gb is working
in AlienAutopsy, it states 16gb max
