Take for M.2 shield is best to get this type than those zip tie onto the SSD.
This type is a proper enclosure so the SSD will be secured.
should have gotten this. i got the arctic one and quality is not very good.. imo

I just share what I observe and no video editing does not wear out SSD that quickly.
Nope. Firstly, most online games are server based. Transferring data to the server skips your storage entirely because it takes too much time. Basically, when the game is loaded to your RAM, your CPU calculates what you do, then collate the data every few ms, pings your NIC, to send the data to destination server via UDP(speed) which is usually a few bytes of data. The data comes directly from the RAM which is way faster compared to SSD.

That said, when you initially launch the game, load the assets into RAM and loading the game itself, these do use the SSD but it's primarily reading, not writing. Games read more often than write which is why loading speeds is dependant on reading speed since the disk is reading the files on itself. Games usually only write to disk when saving logs, game updates and saving games, all of which have minimal writes compared to others.

Speaking from an architectural viewpoint of course.

Been seeing quite a few builds offering the 1TB KingBank KP260 Plus Gen 4 SSD, but I haven’t heard much about the brand. Has anyone here used this SSD before and can share their experience/reviews?

I’m deciding whether to stick with the KingBank or pay extra for the Lexar NQ780. Lexar seems to be the more reputable brand, but low write speed (not sure if it's consider a down or upgrade)

Would appreciate any advice 👍

Kingbank is okie. I'm using their DDR5 memories.

Can't comment on Kingbank but Lexar NQ780 I can comment.
NQ780 is a decent SSD but runs hot so recommend to get a M.2 SSD heatsink
Alternative is you can check if there's NM790 which is better SSD than NQ780.

Same thing for Gen 4 SSD it is recommended to use a M.2 SSD heatsink to keep it cool.
The NM790 doesn't heat up quite as bad as NQ780.

Yeah, I actually thought of NM790 but was quoted +140 for the upgrade, find the upgrade cost quite high.

Do you all think it's a fair price for the upgrade ?

Personally, I would go for nm790 because it is TLC nand unlike the other two which are QLC nand. TLC nand is generally more durable and faster (especially write speed) than QLC.

While the two QLC models have a durability rating of 600tbw, the tlc NM790 has 1000tbw. Referring to 1tb models.

TLC nand maintains a higher write speed than QLC after the pSLC cache is exhausted. But that has to be taken together with the context of whether the pSLC cache is large enough for one's usage. The kingpin model has virtually no information in that regard while the 780 and 790 have about 230+ gb of pSLC cache. So one consideration is whether you would be writing more than 230gb in one go. The cache also scales with remaining space available so if you drive is nearly full, you will have very little cache left as well. If you don't see youself handling such large files on a regular basis and you don't fill your drive to the brim, TLC would be less useful in that regard.

So my preference in descending order would be - 790, 780, kingpin. Kingpin is last not because I think it is bad but because it has very little details available.

Wow but like @uselessbum quoted if you can upgrade to NM790 is better than NQ780.
Lexar NQ series are lower model than NM series.
You decide whether you want to pay $100+ but I do have one NQ780 here so far OK just it runs hot.

Real world usage wise you can't see any difference unless you do benchmark.

Yeah true, do you have any heatsink attached to your NQ780?

Yep, my bad. The KP260 is TLC.

It states that the pSLC cache is only 160 gb. That's lower than both lexar models which are around 230gb.

The specs seemed to have lowered since that time (review was in 2024). Durability lowered, and even advertised speeds were lowered.

Video editing does wear SSDs faster than normal browsing/docs, because of how much writing it does. But modern SSDs are built for it.

*Why it causes wear*
1. *Lots of writes*: Rendering, exporting, caching, proxies, scratch disks. A 10-min 4K export can write 20-100GB in one go.
2. *Temp files*: Premiere, DaVinci, CapCut etc constantly write cache/preview files while you edit.

SSDs wear out based on *TBW - Terabytes Written*. Once you hit the TBW rating, cells start to degrade.

*How fast does it actually wear?*
Example for a typical 1TB NVMe SSD with 600 TBW rating:
- *Heavy editor*: 200GB written per day, 5 days a week = ∼1TB per week = ∼52TB per year
- *Lifespan*: 600 TBW / 52 TB per year = ∼11.5 years

Even pros rarely kill an SSD in under 3-5 years. Most people upgrade for speed/capacity before the drive actually dies.

*3 ways to make your SSD last longer*
1. *Separate drives*: OS/apps on SSD C:, and use a 2nd SSD or HDD for project files, cache, and exports. This is the #1 pro move.
2. *Set cache to a different drive*: In Premiere/DaVinci, point media cache to your secondary drive
3. *Don't fill it past 80%*: SSDs get slower and wear faster when almost full. Leave breathing room.

*Bottom line*
Video editing wears SSDs more than gaming or office work, but you won't "kill" a good NVMe in a year unless you're doing 8K daily exports to the same drive.
