I am a newb building a comp and need your help and advise on whether this build is good.

Intel i5 3570
Corsair Vengence PC 3 1600 CL9 8gbx2
Asus GTX 660 TOP 2gb

Samsung 120 GB Evo
Cooler Master 431 Casing

My budget is about 1200. your comments are appreciated thanks!

Lastly with your current budget you can go for haswell setup. And you do not need a z77 board if you are not overclocking.

I have Monitor, Mouse and KB as well as network card. I have a 2 TB HDD that i can reuse so wont be needing it in my new setup.

Oh, may i know whats the definition of a haswell setup? i really duno is it better?
As for the Z77 board yea, i dont think i will be OC-ing so which do you recommend?

Ok haswell is a new 4th gen cpu. It is usually B87 H87 or Z87 board.

So since you aint oc-ing and do not need anything like monitor and hdd kb and mouse.

And i will take it as you need an OS.

if you 3570 non k version you don't need Z77 motherboard since you not gonna OC

haswell clock for clock slightly faster than ivy bridge

8GB ram more than sufficient unless you like to open 100 tab in browser..

if im not wrong 760 is about 670 in terms of performance, bit better than 660.. have GPU boost 2.0 so you can just plug n play for better performance

for your build 620W is overkill.. 550w would be better if you want save a few $

don't know about MSI QC.. i heard ASUS best mobo brand though but most of their haswell mobo gold color damn ugly

Their boards are ok. They have been improving over the years.

The one you quoted was an ivy cpu. Current is called haswell cpu.

It is newer and is just slightly different by $30-$49 max.

I am just gonna add to the already recommended specs that others has given.


1) Cpu: Get the non-k i5-4570. the 'k' version is for overclocking

2) Motherboard: this one u need to research by urself as some motherboard comes with internal wifi and 1-2 ps/2 ports(your mouse and keyboard interface) go to the manufacturer's website and check out their I/O ports.

3) PSU: In my own opinion, seasonic and Silverstone makes their own(not made in china) so their quality control is much better. If u managed to get a bad one then u are just very unlucky. BTW, its true that 620w is sort of overkill and if you really want to save more you can go for the 500w one that seasonic has. But its better to get slightly higher wattage for a PSU.

4) RAM: you don't need 16GB unless you doing rendering stuff. 8GB is more than enough for games and normal office work. Get the cheapest LOCAL ram. preferably 1600mhz

5) Graphic Card: In my opinion, get the gigabyte 760 GTX 2GB. Its like the best $$ for its value. Palit 760 GTX 2GB is for budget conscious just slightly less performance. If you can wait awhile, NVidia will drop their prices as ATI is releasing their new cards.

6) SSD/HDD: Plextor is the best value for SSD. you can consider it. you might want to consider a 256GB instead if within your budget about S$288 for now.

7) Casing: the best value would be Sharkoon T28.

8) OS: Obviously go for 64bit as 32bit OS limits ram/memory to 4GB.
Its up to you if you want win 8 or 7. You only need the Professional version if you want to use Remote control or domain networks which you won't use so go for Home editing.

If you not sure where to buy:

mynextcomonline <-- if you are lazy/busy to go down. they provide free delivery(>$100) and free assembly if you buy a whole PC(which you are).
They accept only cash on delivery and gives you quite a very reasonable amount of discount for it.

Tradepac <-- if you are going down to simlim this is the place to bargain. But make sure you request to get your boxes and extra cables/stuff back.

If is is not needed then get the hair raya haji promo at Mynextcom gigabyte gtx760 2gb or MSI gtx760 2gb with superflower hx500 PSU gold rating at $459. Best deal also.

Then the remainder get a better chassis. Nzxt h230 for silent performance At $109 or fractal design arc midi at $129.

Might have some money for ice kopi

i agree with this.. i used to only have a 128 GB (actual ~110GB) you can only have about 3-5 games before you start to run out of space due to OS taking ~40GB of space

If your OS is 40+gb then there might be something wrong already. Or could be your Win8.1 already overkill the space. Or could be all the downloads that you download are stored in temporary folders or you simply did not move it to your main HDD.

My win7 only 18.9gb included with all the current updates.

Im left with 34.1gb after installing Battlefield 3 19.9gb, Battlefield 4 beta 5.6gb, Burnout Paradise 6.3gb, D3 11.7gb, and the rest is other softwares and applications like itunes, DBamp audio converter and ripper, microsoft office 2007, Microsoft visual studio C 2008, AutoCAD 2009. (total 22.5gb) and the list goes on.

Still able to install another 2 more games. And the remaining for small daily download stuffs that are stored on ssd first.

hmm maybe u are right haha, ever since i transferred out from my 128GB SSD i havent been monitoring space much. prob remembered OS space usage wrongly

some games like WoW take around 20GB space though, thats why i had to move to a larger one

hey bro. ask u ah do you use special software to keep ur c drive in check? for me my c drive always increase in size. because

1.of the temp download etc, even after i clean them once a month.

2 all game save files are located automatically in c drive, which is a headache

3. some software still does not have options to change installation

planning to get a ssd too so currently considering the size. wont get soon cause overseas now

is better for to get 2 x 4GB just in case 1 slot is spoil or any error
