Hi experts,

My current old CPU set (bought in 2017, with upgraded motherboard in 2021) is starting to show blue screen.

I have 2 options now
1) Maybe just replace GPU to get better fps (probably processor too)
2) Get a new set from aftershock for about the same price for a totally new set

Thanks so much

Specs here:
Corsair LPX DDR4 3200Mhz 2x8GB Red LED 16GB(CMU16GX4M2C3200C16R)
AMD R5 1600 + Gigabyte B450m DS3H V2 AM4
WD HDD blue 7200 1TB
samsung 960 evo nvme m.2 (256GB)
evga 1080ti sc2
EVGA Supernova 750W G3 80+ Gold
Prism 300

Update bios + 5700x3d ($230 aliexpress) and a 7800xt($640 on thetechyard) seems like a pretty good combo.
For $885 on aftershock can only get a 5600 + rtx 4060, which is the same platform(AM4) and not even close performance.
If you want to build a new PC, I can only recommend DIY(either by yourself or go SLS to build), since the recommended aftershock motherboard + ram is not good.
Below was something i drafted for AM5 for a friend,
CPU: AMD RYZEN 5 7500F $240 (SLS)
Motherboard: GIGABYTE B650 Eagle AX $229 (Amazon.sg)
CPU Cooler:TR Peerless Assassin 120 SE $45(SLS)
RAM:G.SKILL Flare X5 Series 6000Mhz CL32 $150(Amazon.sg)
PSU:Thermaltake GF1 (2024) Fully Modular ATX 850W Power Supply $121 Tier A on PSU Cultist (amazon.sg)
GPU:powercolor Radeon RX 7800XT $640(thetechyard.sg which is aftershock)
Case: Lian Li Lancool 216 $125 (SLS)
$1550

Basically buy the parts(amazon + techyard), then when they come bring them to SLS for someone to build, otherwise do it yourself

Blue screen can be either RAM or Windows issue.
I am not sure how familiar you are with PC.
1) Update motherboard BIOS so you can upgrade to Ryzen 5 5600.
First gen of Ryzen are quite weak so to drive the GTX 1080 Ti.
TBH you haven't tap the full potential of the GPU.

2) Reinstall Windows than install AMD Chipset driver.
AMD Chipset driver install not only the motherboard chipset but
also tweak the CPU power plan for better performance.
*If you have any important data backup first.

https://www.gigabyte.com/Motherboard/B450M-DS3H-V2-rev-1x/support#support-dl-driver-chipset

If you are not sure how to do these, you can bring to a shop.
Whether you want to buy a new set is up to you.
Depending on what you use/game you play, you just need to upgrade
and repair it.

It would be able to serve you well.

Happened to my previous 7 years old AM3 rig. I encountered BSOD every few minutes. At first I thought it was the ram and I went to rma both ram sticks. Did not resolve the problem. Then I guess it was the SSD and I went to buy another SSD. PSU and GPU were bought just a year ago so I did not think there were the culprits either.

Just when I tried to boot from usb drive to install windows on the new drive. It got stuck with weird images. I kept trying but to no avail. I then just about guess that the motherboard may be dead. Given that the specs were so old, I had no choice but to build a new system with new motherboard, cpu, ram and casing while reusing the other components.

Went to sell the AM3 cpu on Carousell. The buyer said that he had no problem booting from my cpu. My hunch turned out to be right.

Guess that your rig may be time to go just me mine.

Thanks so much for the help guys!!
@soreloser will definitely go check those prices. Are powercolor gpus good? Was looking towards nvidia for the ray trace and dlss features. But very little games use them, so not worth it right?

@86technie yups will get a new cpu to see if fps becomes better. Hoping to prolong the gpu usage

@nakedtons hope its just a cpu thing hahaha.

Personally I prefer Nvidia(using rtx4070ti) for their dlss features, not so much for ray tracing since I like having 100+ FPS at 1440p. Not a big fan of FSR(too blurry and artifacts). But if you on a tight budget, 7800xt is about the same or better than a 4070super($900) without any features

While updating bios, just realised the motherboard was only V1 and not V2. Were they cheating by charging me a more expensive set?

yes.

ray tracing and upscalers are increasingly prevalent in big games nowadays, but if u dont play them or dont forsee urself playing them in the future, then u can save a buck and get amd for equivalent or usually better performance.

mobo revisions are generally fixing bugs in previous versions or new lower cost of production. usually revisions cost the same, though if anything, u got the more expensive version.

depending on how much u are willing to spend...
but first look i think that r1600 is not even using the full power of the gtx 1080ti
depending on what u want to play and at what resolution u want to play at.
the first thing would be to up the cpu to 2nd hand 5600 or 5600x or aliexpress 5700x3d
this alone i think u will feel at least 50-70% uplift... but first u need to update the bios..
gpu u can look at 7800xt or 4070 super all current gen brand new
if u looking to game on rt titles u can look at 4070 super
if u looking at gaming over all 7800xt both up to 1440p
but bare in mind... if u are using a 1080p monitor then no point

Back in my ddr3 days. I have this mb that sometimes crash. I eventually figure out a ram capacitor dies, because it is bloated. Technically, if you replace that capacitor, everything will work perfectly again.

if its ur mb error then u need to change the whole mb unless u know how to repair it...
then again changing new mb... now u can look at b550 or just jump to am 5 up to u

Thanks so much for the tips.
Tweaking my setup to this, but not sure which series for the powercolor GPU as the specs looks the same (Standard / Fighter / Hellhound).
Looking to using a slimmer vertical chasis in the future to save space hahaha.

New specs:
Corsair LPX DDR4 3200Mhz 2x8GB Red LED 16GB(CMU16GX4M2C3200C16R)
AMD R5 5700X3D
Gigabyte B450m DS3H V2 AM4
Samsung 990 Pro | PCIe 4.0 M.2 SSD
Powercolor 7800XT (Standard / Fighter / Hellhound)

EVGA Supernova 750W G3 80+ Gold
Prism 300
Corsair iCUE 2000D RGB Airflow | Mini-ITX Case (Black)

specs only tell one story. the cooling performance of these models vary quite a bit, with the hellhound being the best in class for the 78xt. as far as i know only the fighter, hellhound and red devil are offered locally, with the fighter coming in at a significant discount at techyard.

the 2000d only supports mitx mobos and sfx psus, both of these parts u want to reuse are not compatible. im not sure about matx cases available locally that are similar in layout, but i have come across a couple on taobao.

Of the 3, which one would you suggest?

Ok will abort my plan for a compact chasis haha. Thanks man
