Hi,

My fibre broadband contract is up and there are offers for 200mbps and 300mbps (looking at M1 for these plans - i've given up on ST due to its customer service). I'm not really sure which to sign up for.

Can anyone provide any advice? I'm not even sure whether my computer's wireless adapter has a limit to the speed that it can receive (as I've read that the internet speed can also be limited by the computer's network card?)

I usually have my computer and mobile phone connected at the same time. Sometimes, 1 tablet and 1 other computer are also connected to the internet. Will 200mb be enough or is 300mb more worth it?

Thanks!

Depending on your usage. In fact, for most users 50mbps is more than enough :) unless you p2p alot. My last contract was 50mbps and I get an average of 7-8 MB per second of torrent download speed. Now I'm using 200 mbps and I get between 15-20 MB. That's on average 2-3 minutes per Gigabtye vs 1 to 1.5 minutes. I did not notice any difference on normal web browsing - it's just speedy.

You should be more concern with the WIFI bandwidth and interferences. Six Things That Block Your Wi-Fi, and How to Fix Them | PCWorld

Bottom line:
1. Depending on your day to day usage.
2. if you are connected via WIFI only, don't waste your money on 300mbps.
3. Invest the $ you save on the differences (i.e. $240 over the period of the contract) on a good router. You get more bang for the buck.

A good Cat 6 cable will solve all unnecessary problem. You can install it yourself or get a contractor. Please share your bad experience with ST customer service. If you want to recontract with extra months waive must call 1609 to sign and ask for extra more months instead of 1688. Now existing customer get 5 mths waive for 200M plan without Tv and can ask for extra 2-3 mths more.

What did ST CSO did to you. What bad experience you had, please share.

Thanks! I think 200mbps is good enough for me. I'm usually using it for work purposes that require transfer of huge files sometimes. I'm currently using 100mbps and it seems to work fine except when I have other devices also connected concurrently. Hence, I was contemplating whether I should go for 300mbps. But since it's not all the time that I have multiple devices connected at the same time, I guess 200mbps should be enough :)

With regards to ST, I've been signing to their broadband plans for many years. Despite having frequent connection issues, I continued renewing contracts with them. Before I decided to switch telco, there were connection issues almost every 2 days and I had to call them up a few times each week. For the months leading to the end of my contract, I was calling the customer service centre almost every week. Sometimes the issues are resolved, but they will also return after a few days. And most of the times, I could not understand what the techinician/ support officer was saying. Also, sometimes the officer will say it's because my area is congested... This comment was the breaking point for me. I switched to M1 100mbps about 2 years ago.

It offered a better price than ST and I thought I'll just try another telco for once. At least I'll know whether it's just ST or the entire telco industry is just like that.

So far M1 has been okay. I've only ever needed to call them once (in 2 years) for a sudden disconnection. Customer service was not bad actually... (maybe I just happened to get someone nice?)

:)

Hi Henry, how is M1 billing system poor? It's okay for me, no difference from ST (at least for me).

As for connection to China, I hardly visit sites from China. Even when I did, with M1 100mbps, I didn't feel any problem with it...

They bill me wrongly and call them and they take long to revise it. True that M1 is cheaper but network not stable. Problem with ST is their ONT and router need to power cycle every few days as long as u did that it will be ok.

I switched from Starhub to M1 and has been with M1 since (3rd contract). Connection is stable compared to starhub and customer service on techincal issues is about the same. All CSOs follow the same script at the superficial level (connect directly to modem, powercycle the devices etc) and their technician will contact you when the basic troubleshooting fails. M1 Customer service on other matters are better than starhub, personal opinion.

@Al_media, if you are using wireless, 200Mbps should suffice.

What is the international bandwidth they are providing?
