Hi folks,

My WD 1 TB external hdd failed on me. Initially when i plug it, it was detected but its very laggy. So i tried to unplug and plug in again.
This time round the drive can be detected but when i try to access it, it just lag and after a while shows the error "This request cannot be performed because of an I/O device error."

May i know what is this error? How to solve?
Do i need to look for data recovery? And got any lobang for cheap data recovery? What i saw on google quote me $2000 :(

Thanks!

Looks like a dying HDD. Other than professional data recovery services, doubt there is much you can do.

I/O errors normally refers to some hardware or firmware issues.
You will need special data recovery tools that can access and repair the firmware and clean room facility if the heads are damaged. Normal user will not have these costly tools and you will need professional data recovery services if your data is valuable.

You can try Can try the following

Kroll Ontrack for its worldwide largest data recovery network and high professional standards.

CBL Technologies for its free evaluation and medium size local sme.

Accplus Technologies for its small outfit, low price and personal service and free evaluation.

All these three have the ability with experienced staff, clean room facility and professional tools to handle your case.
