Need help/advice with new pc

Hi all, I'm not too sure if this is the right place to ask, so please direct me to the right sub-forum if I'm in the wrong place!

Anyway, I'm looking to get a decent gaming pc that can handle games like Far Cry 4/Primal or GTA V. But I'm really just looking for a setup that can run Overwatch at max graphics with no frame lag.

My original plan was to get a Alienware X51 R3 with the following specs for $1,883:

  • Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-6700 Processor (8MB Cache, up to 4.0GHz with Turbo Boost Technology)
  • 16GB (2x8GB) 2133MHz DDR4 Non-ECC
  • 256GB PCIe SSD (Boot) + 2TB (64MB Cache) 7200RPM SATA 6Gb/s
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 with 2GB GDDR5

Is that worth the price? Or is there something better? I would consider building my own PC, but I'm not really familiar with bargaining at Sim Lim...

My budget currently lies at $1900, though I'd really like to save where necessary if that's possible.

Any advice would be much appreciated. Thanks!:)

Firstly, you need to state what is your monitor resolution? Depending on whether it's 1080p or 1400p, your GPU requirement will be different.

The Alienware specs also seems quite weird. i7 CPU with GTX 960 for gaming?? I'm been using an i5 2500 CPU since I first built my PC and it's still going strong for gaming.

Definitely DIY your own PC (or go to SLS and get someone to do it for you). You can safely downgrade the CPU to a i5-6500 and still be futureproof, and use the money to upgrade the GPU.

If you can wait, wait for the GTX 1070 or 1080. With a 1080p monitor, the GTX 1070 will be more than sufficient for all your gaming needs at high and ultra high settings.

If you can't wait, you can also get the current GTX 970 or 980 but make sure you're getting them at a discount.

Thanks mate. My monitor's a Dell P2314H 1920 x 1080. So I take it from the other comments that the GTX 960 kinda sucks then? What's a fair price for the 970/980 and the 1070/1080?

Is there any particular people I'm supposed to know when going to SLS?

Cheers!

well no one knows the pricing for GTX 1070/1080, but u can compare it by yourself over at the Shopping->pricelist to check for current pricing for 970/980

if u want safe play on the shop to purchase will be PCT/maybe fuwell and cybermind?

Hard to give any advice for fair prices when the AIB partners' 1070 and 1080 cards are nowhere in sight yet. But for a single 1080p monitor, the GTX 1080 is an overkill. The 1070 might be a better buy since you're paying less for decent future proofing.

Most of the people here will recommend getting from tradepac when going to SLS. Give them the full list of what you want, they will quote you a price and assemble the whole set for you, and you can take home a completed desktop probably a few days later.

However, do some research on pricing so you can try to negotiate with them. Don't lowball them, but don't let them overcharge you too.

My 2 cents but since you're only doing 1080p gaming, last gen cards will be more than capable for you esp when you're on a budget. A 2nd hand 970 might be good for you

I would suggest getting a high end i5 instead of the i7. save that 200+ bucks and maybe add abit more to get either 980. THAT .. or i recommend you tahan awhile more till GTX 1070 is released in SG

But.. dont go for brands, get a DIY pc , at SLS or if you are near north area, can just go to the pc shop at northpoint, save abit on the taxi fare.

Getting brands like alienware you pay more for the brand name on top of the hardware

Thanks bro. What is the name of this pc shop at northpoint? For DIY PCs, do they build it for you or do they just sell you the individual components and you build it yourself?

Thanks
