I am trying to build a new rig (first time building).
I have narrowed down to these 2 boards:
Asus H97 Pro Gamer
Asrock H81M-HDS

Both are paired with asus strix gtx 970.

I am thinking of getting a 550w PSU, but a friend has advised against it, claiming that it will not be enough.

He has instead advised me to get a 700w PSU.

Is it necessary to get a 700w PSU, and will the 550w work fine?

Additional info:
Ram: Ddr3 1333 1x8gb
SSD: samsung evo 850 250gb
WD 1TB HDD x2
Optical drive: asus DRW-B3ST

Purpose:
Surfing net and playing single player games such as witcher 3, gta v on high settings

TIA

550w is more than enough.

Asus strix gtx 970 is pretty power efficient requiring only one 8pin PCI-e.

Most cards these days aren't as power hungry as before and really only need a big PSU for SLI or CF.

As for the rest of the specs, looks pretty good. I myself am using the H97 pro gamer. Can't really complain about it.

Guess it all depends on your budget.
