Hi guys,

My computer died after a good 6 years. Took the chance to build a new one.

Mainly used to stream and watch videos/dramas (1080p) and play some games (dota/fm/wow). Sometimes I do a bit of photoshop for some of my projects. Most of the time, the cpu is on the floor and I don't intend to oc.

Will be transferring to the new computer 3 sata wd hdds.

My budget 2-3k w/o monitor.

1. i7 6700k + asus h170 pro gaming
2. liquid cooler?
3. kingston value ram 16gb (32 worth it?)
4. video card?
5. samsung 950 pro m2 nvme 512gb ssd
7. superflower leadex 650w gold?
8. casing?

I upgrade from win 7 to win 10. Don't have the win10 cd/thumbdrive.
How to install win 10 to my new com?

Thanks for your views and comments!

Get a z170 motherboard if u want to overclock that cpu if not just get a regular 6700 and dont need to buy liquid cooling. If your not planning on playing AAA GPU intensive games in the future GTX 1060 should be more than enough.

1. i7 6700k + asus h170 pro gaming -> Get a Z170 board if you're getting a K processor.
2. liquid cooler? ->Cryorig A40 @ $159 on Lazada
3. kingston value ram 16gb (32 worth it?) -> 32gb should be useful in your case
4. video card? ->zotac gtx 1080
5. samsung 950 pro m2 nvme 512gb ssd -> samsung 960 pro just launched.
7. superflower leadex 650w gold? -> good choice
8. casing? -> Corsair Carbide 400C

1. i7 6700k + asus h170 pro gaming
Get a 6700 instead of a 6700k

2. liquid cooler?
Use stock cooler that comes with your 6700

3. kingston value ram 16gb (32 worth it?)
Since u only do A BIT of photoshop, like I intend to do too, 16 gb is sufficient. Processing time expected to take at most a couple of mins LONGER but it isn't that Long.

4. video card?
At 1080P the highest end u should get is a gtx 1070, but 1060 6GB is good enough TBH based on the games u play (Dota/fm/wow)

5. samsung 950 pro m2 nvme 512gb ssd
Is this really needed? U won't feel much of a difference in performance unless u are doing extremely huge content transfer like video rendering or photoshopping RAW? For me I'm content with using 2 average SSD in raid 0

7. superflower leadex 650w gold?
Can get HEXA+ 650W, some of the other Bros here recommended this to me

8. casing?
Since u put on the floor, can consider a mid tower ATX case, can get something cheaper like sharkdon or the older CM cases

U can Google on how to deactivate windows on your computer and extract the activation key, or else u could always buy an OEM from Reddit or Carousell not costing more than $40

U would need another computer to create a windows key using windows creation tool on a blank thumb drive minimum 4GB I think. Then plug in once u setup and boot from the thumb drive!

PS: can save money jiu save 😂 don't need spend so much if your usage is moderate also~ I don't see why u should get a gtx 1080 if u are only gaming at 1080P, Nor do I see a need for 32 GB if u don't do video rendering or open 100000 tabs on chrome

Get A z170 board so that you have an option to overclock next time. But unless you absolutely need an i7, get a 6600k.

Video card just get a 1060 since your usage us light

Why do you need a 950 though? a lot more practical to get an 850 evo. Speed wise, i feel its not worth the money

thanks for the comments so far! You guys have been very helpful.

1. i7 6700k (is the performance gain from 6600 to 6700 negligible?)
+ asus z170 (which one to get? There are so many versions sia!)
2. Cryorig A40 (stock cooler good enough? i rarely on the aircon)
3. kingston value ram 16gb
4. 1060 6gb (which brand is more stable?)
5. samsung evo850 512gb ssd
7. superflower leadex 650w gold/ HEXA+ 650W
8. mid atx casing (any recommendations?)

Pls feel free to add on!

1. It wont make much of a difference unless you play AAA games that have been launched recently . Using 8 threads effectively in games is a very recent thing.

2. Even if you dont overclock, you can opt to get a cheap aftermarket cooler if you dont like the noise of a stock cooler trying very hard to cool itself down.

4. Typically people get zotac because its the cheapest. Base on your stated usage 3gb is enough

1. just having higher clock speed and hyperthreads :D
mobo depends on u want to SLI or not. cheapest is A or K.

2. depends on heavy is your OC and if u are not OC how heavy is ur usage to justify a need for AIO (or maybe for silent pc?). either way stock cooler still more than enough.

4. stable? what do u mean by stable? stable OC? stable as in always producing high fps or what??? (none of them can be stable :D)

7. just for for SF ledex 650w gold

8. u want cheap or have good stuff??? FD R5? Corsair 400Q/C? NZXT Phantom? Tecware alpha, tecware titan? cm 690?

1. mobo wise, I am not looking to SLI/OC.

2. I use the computer in a non air con rm. Will be placing the cpu on the floor in one of the corners so air flow aint too good. Usage is pretty high, sometimes I on the computer 12 hrs str.

I don't mind using after market fans as well. Just not sure which ones are better.

8. Least maintenance and ease to clean. Dust is big bugbear for me.

Thanks!

If you not looking to OC, get normal i7 or even an i5 instead

I think a case like the Fractal R5 would be perfectly reasonable actually

6600 not a K, why use a Z170 mobo?

If you are using 6600, just get yourself a Cryorig H7 heatsink. Settle.

I dont usually upgrade the computer, so the setup is supposed to last me for the next 5 years. But I do light gaming and most of the time, the computer is used to play video at 1080p, do office productivity and some PS for my photos. Will the processor and mb combi be ok?

Will be adding to this setup 3x wd hdd from my current computer. Will the 550W be sufficient?

Phanteks P400 also looks very good. Dust mitigation wise, is this better or the fractal one?
