Need help for Taichung!

Hi there, I am planning a Taiwan trip in End of December and need help with Taichung itinerary.
I have a full day to spend before heading to Fengjia night market at night.

Anyone have any suggestions to share please?
(Would like to avoid over touristy and far places like Mon coeur, SML, Monster village, Princess Annie Garden, Lavender cottage.)

And would like to check if any suggestions to buy good Sun Cake in Xitun District.

I went to Taichung for 1 day 1 night. Day time cover yi zhong Jie, night time cover Fengjia night market.

I've visited Yi zhong before, there's alot of good food there! i am planning to go there before heading to Fengjia too!
But i'm going to taichung for 2 day one night, the next afternoon i need somemore suggestions before going to fengjia again.
Anymore to share??

I quite like Art Street (艺术街 Yi Shu Jie) in Taichung. Easy and lazy walk. Tung Hai University is in the vicinity too. Visit the famous chapel, the Luce Memorial Chapel on the campus of the university. There's a night market too.

If you'll like something not touristy, I suggest visiting the 921 Earthquake Museum in the Wufeng suburbs of Taichung. There's a bus that goes straight there. This museum not only documents that earthquake that devastated Taiwan in 1999, but also presumes a school (complete with collapsed buildings and torn running track) that were destroyed by the quake.

Looking at how the school track have shifted and the way the building fell was pretty mind-blowing. You can literally see how much the earth moved during the quake. The series of "before and after" photos were also pretty amazing.

This is very different from your typical attraction, and I'm pretty sure you'll never see another museum like this ever again.

This museum not only documents that earthquake that devastated Taiwan in 1999, but also presumes a school (complete with collapsed buildings and torn running track) that were destroyed by the quake.

Looking at how the school track have shifted and the way the building fell was pretty mind-blowing. You can literally see how much the earth moved during the quake. The series of "before and after" photos were also pretty amazing.

This is very different from your typical attraction, and I'm pretty sure you'll never see another museum like this ever again.

Yes it is a good recommendation and can spend about 1.5-2hours there. The difficulty is going there n out with a driver can be a pain in e ass. Been there in 2010, it is a good place as they supported the fallen school with structural beams so that all can see how serious was the 9/21 earthquake in 集集。

Hi, thanks for the recommendation, i might go to yi shu jie! I've visited Tung Hai Uni last year, it's really quite relaxing to lie on the grass floor and see kids and dogs running around..

You don't need a cab. There's a public bus（公车）from Taichung that stops just on the main road outside the museum. There's a big stone pillar on the main road with the words "Earthquake Museum" in both English and Chinese, so you can't get lost.

From there, it's a 10 minute walk along a very pleasant small road right beside a padi field to the museum itself.

Transportation through central Taiwan (where SML is) is a bit tedious, due to the mountainous terrain and winding roads. SML is quite far from Taichung (a non-stop bus to SML takes about 3-4 hours), and I doubt there's direct SML->museum bus in the first place.

A cab or car would be costly, but faster. If cost is not a concern, this is your best bet.

Otherwise, I would suggest heading to Taichung by express bus, chuck your luggage in the train station locker or in your hotel, then head out to the museum. It's only 30 mins away by bus. It's totally possible to do this trip (Taichung->Museum) in 1 afternoon.

Totally agree with you, but then back down n up, consumes valuable travelling time. So if really very keen, still better to cab there n bus back to taichung.

Thanks! As I have limited time in Taichung, I think I will consider hiring a cab.

Was quoted 3500ntd to go to sml + 集集(武昌宮.軍史館.車站)>車程 OR 中台禪寺>廣興紙寮>921地震園區.

Is it considered reasonable?
