Need help in ICT deferment

I have registered for my 2 years full-time degree course in SAE which will start in April. My upcoming high key ICT is in May. I have applied for deferment once, submitting all relevant documents but it was rejected. I went to my MP for help but it was rejected too.

They say that deferment cannot be given for people who enroll in a private school.

It took me almost 5 years to save up for this course. I have paid in full and it's full-time. I hope not to miss any lesson time.

What is the next step that I should take?

try speaking to your CO on the 1st day of ICT...

Have you spoken your CO before submitting your MP letter? There are rumours that they don't like people submitting MP letters to put pressure on them...

Thanks vasilli07. I have not spoken to my CO. What is the procedure like for speaking to CO on the first day? Sorry but this is the first time I am applying for deferment and this course means a lot to me.

hmm...then maybe you try calling your unit 1st, then get the co to call you or you call him if they can give you his phone number. If not, then on the 1st day of ict, bring all your documents to see your co. But just in case it gets turned down again, bring your barang barang again.

Call your unit to speak to your NS Unit CO.. he will ask you go see him or fax documents in.. if some LL one will need to book in first day with all your barang barang and see him or during LO briefing..

Private sch is not deferrable.. if your unit need to numbers of pax, then no choice.. they might give you off pass to attend school while clear 1 cycle ICT at the same time..
Anyway 2 weeks wont miss much in school.. can always request from the lecturers for make up what~

Try and try again. I had a similar problem before. Mine was private school and my reason for deferring was for my exams. They gave me the same excuse about private school. I reiterated that its because of exams. If it didn't clash with my exams its fine. It was like talking to my dog.

I wrote to my unit first and was told no. I then wrote a second time and was told no and if I want to appeal to write to NSAD (don't know if that still exists today). They also said no. This time the excuse was that I am given 6 months' notice and its enough time for me to plan my schedule. I told them that even if they gave me 6 years' notice also not enough because I am not the one who sets the exam dates. If Mindef can force my school to move the exams date I am fine with it. But can they?

Again like talking to a dog. They keep harping about haven given me enough time to plan. Is it so hard for those idiots to understand that I am NOT the one planning exam dates?

I wrote a total of four or five letters and in my final letter threatened to go to my MP. They relented but no before saying again that in future to make use of the advance notice to plan my schedule. I thanked them and told them that if my father owned the school, I would certainly have changed the exam dates to suit me.

Their job is to say no. And the fact that its a private school makes it easier to say no. But you have to persist.

Yes but if I had given up I wouldn't have gotten it. Bottomline is you have to try and try. Even till the day you in-process you can still try to ask your CO.

Thanks everyone. I am taking a degree in Interactive Animation which means I'll have daily/weekly assignments which I have to submit. Even if they allow me time off to attend my tutorials and lectures, I don't think they'll allow me to take my Macbook in to do my assignments which is why I am appllying for deferment.

I will call my unit to speak with my CO.

Anyway, I also doubt that they'll allow me time off on the second week of the ICT since it's out-field time. I have seen it happened before. I'll be missing a lot of tutorial and lecture time and will not be able to clock the minimum attendance requirement by the institute.

I will call my unit tomorrow.

Good luck. I had ICT last December which clashed with my classes as well, but was unable to defer even after going to MP. Let us know what happens

anyway good luck, if you know your unit and your oc, can ask oc to fight for you or activate someone else for ICT strength... if got 6 mth, someone up there can do something..~

those on holding list are either not really trained or makeup personal...a unit would prefer the old guys to stick together...especially if it's those combat units as they need to go for atec

deferring reservist woes

hi... i'm also facing the same prob.

reservist from 31st jan to 14 feb.
i'm a fulltime student in SIM (that isnt counted vs. nus/ntu/smu)
i also signed up for NCAP course in Feb + paid already!
school fees also paid already & i'm suppose to miss 2 weeks of lessons?

Yday i spoke to the AO she say cannot defer must take time off??
i'm going down to see my CO today but
if get rejected what are my available options? see MP?
sometimes seeing MP also may not help rite?

the NCAP also can't get refund (need 2weeks in advance)
that one if no choice nvm can sign up again but 2 weeks of lectures!?

if i have valid reasons such as school & NCAP classes (with all the supporting documents)
will i get time off my ICT if suay suay i have to turn up?

any advice wld be appreciated!

Your MP can just write a letter hoping that your CO will let you defer...but if you have already met your CO and talk to him, throwing an MP letter is unlikely to change his decision...

Just a note that by the time your MP letter reached the CO & the CO finish reading it, your ICT would be over by 1 week!

I called my Unit and was told to see my CO on Briefing Day in March. I will bring down all my necessary documents and speak to him personally.

The institute has also agreed to help me by preparing one more letter by the head lecturer in charge of the program.
