Hi all,

Recently my PC started freezing during games, auto shutting down and restarting even though I have reformatted my PC. Not sure what's the problem too, so thinking of upgrading. Have been using this PC about 4 yrs plus.

Would it be good just to get everything new, or upgrade from my current PC if possible? My main uses would be mostly surfing the net, watching Netflix and playing dota2 mostly. Maybe if I upgrade I might play some games like BF 5

Current PC

I5-6600 with B150 Mobo
2 x 8gb Kingston ram 2133mhz
Asus Nvidia GTX 1060 6gb
Super flower 80+ gold 650w
Cryorig H7 cooler
Samsung 850 Evo M.2 120gb

Thinking of upgrading to
Ryzen 5600x with Gigabyte B550 DS3H AC
Zotac 3060ti
and a new case and cooler,

Any idea if my ram and psu would be resuable?

Many thanks in advance

DDR4 is reusable but such a slow speed is not recommended.

You don't know which component is faulty as well.

I would check the temperatures for a start, then perform some tests on the SSD, RAM and GPU.

Also, that motherboard sucks.

An ASRock B550M Pro 4 costs about the same but has a much better I/O selection at the back, and also better VRMs.

if there had been no issues before upgrading, i would say reusing some parts would be a good idea, but now that u mention that it has some problems and u dont know what the root cause is, i would say a full upgrade is safer. the ram is technically reusable but it is very slow by todays standards and will hold back most modern cpus, so better to buy new, and we dont have enough info on whether the psu is faulty and leading to ur system crashing, so buy new too.

if u are looking at the 5600x, u can also consider the 5600 non x, basically the same performance for cheaper. the b550m ds3h is fine, but only just. also can consider 6700xt as it is around the same performance as 3060ti but also generally cheaper. would help if u provide other details like ur budget and monitor resolution and refresh rate.

I most probably will just get a new PC.

Would there be any way i could save on? Probably the case and cooler only right?

Budget wise actually thought of 1.5k, if possible to include a 27" monitor 1080p? But if have to exceed my budget also no choice haha

Currently using a BENQ GW2470H

You can reuse your H7 if you find an AM4 mounting kit.

Then if the PSU is under warranty, try to RMA and see the outcome.

Anyway, wait 11/11. A lot of old gen parts still seem to be overpriced. If you DIY probably can save a lot than buying from shop.

with a build this powerful its worth going for 1440p high refresh monitor
u can cut cost reusing case and psu, and going for a cheap id cooling se224 ~25-30$ instead. fuma 2 is very overkill for 5600.

My humble opinion to maximize on cost for performance is to skip buying a new casing and use back your old one.

For the cooler, @Phen8210 suggestion is good - find a suitable bracket if your cooler has a AM4 support. Chances are high since AM4 has been around for a while. In the worst-case scenario, you can still live with the default box cooler -- your system will survive fine.

From the money saved in this segment, test out if the build works fine as intended cos if it's still acting with the same symptoms you've mentioned earlier, then the PSU needs to be replaced to get rid of all legacy components.

Finally, for a monitor upgrade, you've to ask yourself what you're trying to achieve and what do you need out of the upgrade. If you're going 27-inch, go with at least 1440p support and a suitable refresh rate based on your expectations. That will cost, but at least it's a clear step up from what you have.

Auto shut down? 4 yrs+, take a look inside, see if your CPU fan is spinning, if it is, try reapplying thermal paste on your CPU

This pny 3060ti is on sale for 4hrs more, if you have vouchers and bonus, only costs a bit over $500
https://s.lazada.sg/s.0HOfG
You can then put the money saved into this Acer 31.5" 165hz 1440p monitor, likewise with vouchers and bonus, cost you a bit over $300
https://s.lazada.sg/s.0HQWf
WD sn770 1tb nvme $131 after use double11 code

Your I5-6600 has an iGPU on it, try to boot your PC with just an iGPU without the GTX 1060 in this case your Intel® HD Graphics 530. Maybe also do a Furmark stress test on the CPU via CPU Burner option or other similar CPU stress testing software. See if it's the CPU that's giving you problem or something else. If no freezing then you have narrow down the list to Mobo/Ram/GPU/PSU. My feeling points towards your GTX 1060 or PSU, either one of these parts causing the freezing.

Thanks everyone for the feedback.

In the end i decided to get a new setup for a really good deal. Can anyone recommend me a good 27 inch 1440p monitor to match my new set up? My current monitor looks like its gonna fail me soon. its a 60hz 1080p benq monitor.

New rig setup:
5600x
MSI MPG 550 Gaming Carbon
32gb Corsair V Pro SL
2TB samsun evo 870
RTX 3060ti Palit Dual 8gb
Gigabyte 750w Gold

safe buy are the known brands ones at 500? 600?$, dell 2721dgf etc

then theres the pixle 27" 1440p 165hz with lg nano ips at ~400

i bought the typhoon display 27" 1440p 165hz ips at 350 (colours are VERY off, took me days of manual calibration to get it looking right)

the next level move is taobao a lg nano ips at ~300$.

i wouldnt look at VA panels unless u are primarily using your pc in a dark room and ips glow is very obvious

Thank you for your input.

I was wondering still if i should get a 27" 1440P monitor with 75hz or 27" 1440P with 144hz, if the extra $200 is worth it. As im mostly using it to surf the net, watch videos, play dota and some AAA games like GTA, BF V and Modern warfare 2.

If you play Dota, go 144hz, improve your gameplay tremendously.

I RMB last time I played Dota went from 60 to 144hz.. when moving the camera, it's a massive difference. Last hitting is also much easier because updates are faster.

I just got a very good deal for this, price wise i couldnt beat it even if i built everything out on my own. Bought it 2nd hand at 1150 with the seller selling just after 6 months of purchase at 2400+ from pcdreams. And i sold my old setup for 288. so paying 862 to upgrade for sure was no brainer for me.

If not i would def have gone for the 5600/ASrock pro 4 combi, already had all the parts in cart during 11.11!
