Need help on identifying problem with brand new hard disk

Hi experts

Recently bought a WD Caviar Black HDD 1TB for $60 bucks from Sim lim and been facing some problems...For reference I'm running Windows 10 and using a SSD + secondary 1TB HDD.

First noticed the transfer speeds are erratic. When transferring large files (>800mb to 30gb), the transfer speed starts at 65-70mb/s for around ~40-60 secs, then suddenly drops to an unbearable 3-10mb/s which will not move up again.

I have searched online for solutions and tried all of the below :
Switched to a new SATA port on my mobo, changed the SATA cable, updated AMD chipset SATA controller drivers, used HD tune to check for errors.The HD tune SMART check came back with no errors and no bad sectors.

The read speed on the drive is quite ok as well. The only anomaly I have seen is the slow write speed (when copying things into the drive) that starts at 150-200mb/s then moves down to 45-60+mb and finally down to 5-10mb/s.

Can any bro please advise me on what's wrong? I have 90 days warranty but I would like to make sure it's the hard disk that has a problem before I claim warranty. Thanks for any help!!!

Your WD black HDD is a used drive right? I suggest you download HDTune and scan for error (do not check Quick scan). The slow writing is an indication of weak/bad sectors.

It is actually a brand new drive, doesn't seem used, so should not have bad sectors. But this is a WD Caviar Black (which is released >7-8 years back, so I guess it is pretty old), which the shopkeeper told me is a WD Black export set so does this count as misrepresentation? In hindsight I should have noticed WD Black (retail 100++) cannot be so cheap :'(...

Where are you transferring the data from? Over network, from an SSD or another HDD?

Slow transfer speeds can usually be narrowed down to two issues. On modern computers with SATA3 interface capable of 6Gbps (in theory), usually one end or the other is the choke point, unless you are using SSDs at both ends.

My configuration is--
Samsung Evo 850 250gb SSD
1tb WD Caviar Black
1tb Lenovo External hard disk 1tb

I have tried moving large files of 700mb from SSD -> External and External -> SSD, transfer speeds maintain at around 60-70 mb/s all the way

Even from WD Black -> SSD/External is fine, because the read speed seems fine.

Problem only comes when I copy files into the WD Black (i.e. write into the drive) then it becomes very slow. So I presume that WD black is the problem...

If it's still within the warranty better proceed for RMA or within the shop 7 days one to one exchange...

Symptom look like a slow response issue that encountering from some of the WD drives...

Try doing some benchmark on the hdd with hdtune/crystaldiskmark and see the seq/random read/write speeds. If there is something wrong with the speed, it could be the controller chip on the hdd that is having issues. Cheers

Edit: U can use http://hdd.userbenchmark.com/ as reference. Just search for the model no. If unable to find the exact model, find something that is similar like 1tb wd black hdd. The readings should not be that far apart

Obviously have issue with either ur hdd or the controller chip (located in the green circuit board).

Update: I successfully did a cash refund with the nice shopkeeper of #05-32 after showing him the faulty seq. write speed result. Then went on to buy a WD blue at tradepac for $66 which is working just fine.

P.S. for the bro that ask for the SMART info of the faulty drive, can't rmb all the results but HD tune says it was all ok
