Due to personal issues, I'm thinking about renouncing my PR and moving overseas. I'm fully aware that this means I can never stay in Singapore ever again, however, I am willing to make that risk.

Does anyone know whether it's possible to renounce while serving (I'm about 3 months in) Anyone you know of who did? What's the procedure like?

Any help/advice would be appreciated!!!

I think is too late.

You can ask ICA maybe? But that doesn’t mean you can get yourself discharged.

May I ask what's the source for this info?

google the name ben Davis

if nt u can search for gov.sg about this para

"All second-generation male SPRs must enlist for National Service, together with their male Singaporean counterparts, once they reach the age of 18. This is stated in the Enlistment Act. If a male SPR does not enlist, he will be considered a NS defaulter.

All NS defaulters may be subject to a fine not exceeding $10,000 or imprisonment for a term not exceeding 3 years or both. Apart from answering to the Court, NS defaulters below the age of 40 will still have to serve NS.

Second-generation PRs who renounce their PR status without serving NS will face adverse consequences. Their failure to serve NS will be taken into account should they attempt to apply to return to Singapore to study or work."

but i don't mind the adverse consquences. I have no intentions of coming back to SG more than just to visit family or friends maybe once in a while.

I don't get how is this related to this? given that we are talking about 2 different things.

one is averse consequences, one is whether you can even do it.

Basically u can only do it after u ORD

Try renouncing now
Aka u need to leave the country and supposedly dont report back to camp -AWOL charge
Think the moment u try to land at any of the singapore checkpoint, ica can arrest u since u r technically would be gazetted as wanted

Think about this
Why the sg guy who supposedly make crazy rich asians famous didnt turn up for the gala screening
And media dont know somehow dig out he’s technically wanted by MINDEF for escaping NS
This is despite the fact he’s residing in the states for god knows how long and alrdy has american citizenship
Given current sentiments towards NSman that happily AWOL while we do our obligations be it as NSF or NSman, think twice before u act rationaly or irrationaly

You can find it stated twice in a MFA document on citizenship renunciation:

I don't think para 3 which states 'those who are allowed', would apply to you. It seems to refer to those cases where a child leaves singapore quite early on in life (along with some other steps taken by the parents):

In a nutshell:

The only way a male Singaporean citizen can legally avoid NS is if he

1) has another citizenship before the age of 11

2) informs Mindef of his intention to renounce Singaporean citizenship and applies for the necessary exit permits from the age of 13 and obtains deferment at 18

3) does not use or benefit from Singaporean citizenship after 11

4) finally renounces Singaporean citizenship at 21

So, for example, if a child was out of Singapore before age 11, never had a Singapore passport, and his parents were diligent in filling in all the paperwork with Mindef before age 13, he's off the hook. That's a pretty high bar, and basically requires parents of the child to make up their minds about his citizenship very early, and also avoid applying for Singapore identification documents.

Does anyone know whether it's possible to renounce while serving (I'm about 3 months in) Anyone you know of who did? What's the procedure like?

To answer your other question, no idea. Never heard of that. It goes against the policies they have laid out, so highly unlikely other than for exceptional cases that might already warrant a discharge under medical reasons. E.g. terminal or debilitating illness/disability.

If I were you, I would hang on the line, make sure I get to speak to someone, tell my story (no idea how pressing your personal circumstances may be), get some sort of official word on this.

I did hear of someone getting deferment to care for his mother who was dianosed with terminal cancer (e.g. given a few months), but it's not complete discharge, he still had to go back and serve the balance after that.

I'm deeply, deeply depressed and the reason is bc I'm serving NS. I know that doesn't make any sense and that everyone else can do it, but for some reason, it's really taking a toll on me. I have a terrible appetite, can't sleep and probably will kill myself if my only option is serving for 21 more months.

eh u dun really have to renounce your PR to get out of NS leh. if so dire, have you reported to MO to see a psychiatrist? If they verified that you are indeed having serious depression, you maybe discharged and given PES F because of that leh.
