Hi,
I've just moved to Singapore and will be moving into a landed house in a couple of weeks. Once there, I need to get advice from a consultant to set up a good home technology solution. I have tried reading about this myself but am confused, particularly between what needs might be for computer systems versus AV systems and how exactly to go about it.
What I want in the end is a home with strong WIFI signal throughout, all of our music and entertainment content stored on a central system (NAS??) available to be accessed throughout the house over wifi, music available in different locations in the house via wifi speakers and either laptop or smartphone control, networked video content available on LED/Plasma TV screens in the living room and family room.
Our existing kit is:
- 2010 15" MacBook pro (could do with servicing)
- 2012 Sony Viao laptop (basic)
- a couple of ipads
- 42" Panasonic plasma screen (c. 2010)
- Yamaha AV receiver (old - no HDMI inputs)
- pair of JBL bookshelf speakers
In our previous home we used my wife's MBP as the central hub for content and would then have to plug it into the plasma with HDMI and the speakers via a 9mm headphone jack to the AV system. If we wanted to watch content anywhere else, it had to be on this sole laptop with sound through the laptop speakers.
I don't want to simply go into Harvey Norman and ask as I'm sure they'll just see dollar signs and try to flog me a load of stuff I don't need. On the other hand, I don't mind spending money to get the right equipment in place. I'm not an audiophile and don't need high end home theatre - I really just want a well connected home with everything stored in a central place and accessible to multiple devices throughout the house easily.
Any consultants or advisors out there who can help me? Or any recommendations of a good retailer to go to who will be helpful.
Many thanks.
Mark
