Hi all, I'm trying to decide between two jobs. Any insights would be appreciated.
Something about me first: I have two skills that belong in my technical industry. The first skill is more general. The second is specialized.
In terms of general skill I am not very strong. But normally people who have the specialized skill do not have the general skill. So I am rare in this aspect - i.e. having specialized skill with general skill backing. Overall got about 10 years experience.
Both offer salaries and packages that are similar.
The first offer is a relatively large MNC company and working at the project site with other companies. Aspects are as follows:
1. Start off very busy due to immediate deadlines.
2. Most likely long hours - starting early around 8am and finishing around 7pm. Most likely this will continue for at least a year after which things will ease off.
3. Contractually working on every other Saturday but most likely will need to come in every Saturday.
4. Work starts off using general skill, but as time goes along will change to specialized skill at the project site.
5. Company also intends to start it's fully specialized skill based subsidiary in about a year's time in the local market - I will likely get involved in that.
6. Position at start is technical - not managerial. May change to managerial on start of local subsidiary but not confirmed.
7. Office location central.
The second offer is a very small company which will fully use the specialized skill. They are interested in me because of the general skill background.
1. Offer is management position - second in command to boss.
2. Duties would be to improve quality of specialized skill work done by using my general skill background, teach existing staff, also do business development.
3. Every Saturday contractually have to work - but I can exercise discretion if I want to come in or not depending on workload.
4. Work at office - interaction with other companies and known people in industry is minimal.
5. First few months likely to be relaxed and learn the ropes. As time goes along responsibilities and stress will increase.
6. Office location more remote - but commute distance the same.
Since my wife and I have a baby now, she prefers if I spend more time at home. The smaller company may give me that opportunity. Also the manager position title is attractive.
However the bigger company has more resources on hand - the likelihood of me going into their local subsidiary (for when it opens), the likelihood of becoming a specialist anyway for normal projects. The likelihood of continuing to meet known people in the industry. All these are attractive. But the position remains technical.
I guess this post is me trying to organize my thoughts as it is a bit difficult to make the decision.
