Need help with a build for office work.

Hi all,

Im thinking of building a computer for my study room that would mostly be used for web browsing and programs like excel, words etc.

Im unsure if i should go for the cheaper ryzen options or a i3.

I have a budget of $1000 including a simple monitor. I wont be storing much things on it, so maybe a 256 ssd would suffice?

For just web browsing and some word, Excel I think a Core2 PC with a brand new SSD should be more than enough.

If you don't mind second hand and on a tight budget, Core2 (socket 775) old PCs are selling below $100 and some include a monitor. Just slap in a new SSD (and more DDR2 RAM) and you are set.

Thank you but I'd rather have something new as my mum uses the computer in our guestroom the most and im planning to get this for her as a present.

Would the amd cpu mentioned in my part list be "overkill"?

It will depend on your budget but it won't be an overkill. I would suggest spend a little more on a better mobo (maybe a B series mobo or better as AM4 socket can support better CPU in the future if you intend to upgrade the CPU in a couple of years. Also B series can OC )

RAM wise better to buy in pairs rather than 1 stick ( 4GB X 2 stick) as the integrated iGPU work faster with dual channel -> but then you want upgrade RAM not enough slot if only 2 slots mobo.

PSU wise any 400w (to lower your budget) will be more than sufficient IMHO as the Ryzen is quite power efficient. Or buy higher ratings for future upgrade potential, your call. For $99 I think u can get a 600w power flower (modular) with silver 80 ratings.

Thank you very much for the advice. I need the computer to be wireless but those inbuilt in the mobo is quite expensive.

Can you recommend me a normal mobo with no i build wifi and one with it?

ASRock B450M Pro4 + Wireless Adapter and call it a day. Can even go B350 as some stores in SLS still selling.

You want wireless ? Just get those USB wifi / Bluetooth and plug at the back (mobo USB slots). Less than $10, then no need to so headache find mobo

The less than $10 WiFi USB is damn slow + got a lot of interference if you plug at the back. Pcie x1 WiFi card with dedicated antenna is faster.

Honestly, you don’t even need to buy Windows. Just get a free copy of it via Media Creation Tool. Only relavent downside to you would be the ugly watermark.

Rather go for prebuild, i5 below $700.
Add a monitor you are good to go.
DIY wise, have you thought about the warranty?
Anything wrong, can take time off to RMA?

Ohh that is true. Prebuilt from dell? Or are there other companies you'd recommend?
