Need help with CPU troubleshooting

Hi all, just received a CPU from a friend. Have been using mac for these years and never before touch the parts of a CPU.

Got this CPU from him, plug everything in and only BIOS appear for 3seconds, before i can touch anything, the display went out.

This is a working set , but maybe due to his shifting and such, some wires are being disconnected and are hanging everywhere, ( OMG). Y cables after Y cables.

Basic Setup
it is a MSI MOBO with lots of fans , (that is why the wires)
1 CD ROM
2x1GB Ram
1 HDD
1 delicated ATI Graphic card
1 sound card
1 PSU

Age of items around 2years old. He DIY it from scratch. Staying abroad so cant help . would like to troubleshoot instead of bringing down to a shop.

Can i know what other info you guys need in order to help me out?

No boot sound, no beep. nothing, BIOS display MSI for 3 seconds and gone blank.

ok, will do so when i get back, but to list the model, need to detach everything? i tried but i dont know how to detach the Graphics card and sound card.

If you don't really know how to DIY really hard to advice. Best is bring to down SLS to have it check

sounds like PSU problem. fixed a desktop for a friend who had symptoms. if u have a spare PSU lying around just try. or u can buy one 500W generic for $15 at SLS

That was what my friend told me he suspect over the line, is there anyway to test the PSU with my current setup ? i dont have a spare PSU but i have detached all the nonsense fans and lights.

Can try disconnecting the hard disk either by disconnecting the SATA data or power cable. If the comp boot to BIOS and stay there, then the hard disk is faulty.

his suggestion is good. more importantly take away all non essential parts like the dedicated sound card. one more thing u can try is to run on the integrated graphics by taking the ati graphic card out and plugging ur monitor to the motherboard. another is take out all ram leaving only 1 piece and try that piece on another ram slots. if still cannot repeat the process with a different stick of ram. this is to eliminate ram and ram slot as the problem.

if all 3 suggestion fail recommend u pay the $15 and change the PSU. $15 = 2 mcspicy meal

Thanks alot for all the suggestion, will try it now. Cant be the button battery in the Mother board that is faulty right?
