I had a 1.5TB seagate external hard disk. i had no idea what happened as it does not detect my hard disk anymore. it just showed local G

I tried using chkdsk G: /f , but it hangs when my hd is plugged in. it also hang my system but other areas are fine to use. When i plugged out my HD, the system will then be able to move.

Tried using EaseUSdata recovery doesnt work too since the system freeze when i plugged in my hard disk.

Tried right clicking properties on my local:G drive will only show not responding.

Anyone had a solution to solve this ? T_T all my stuffs are inside my HD and i do not want to lose them.

You can try seagate's own diagnostic tools - Seatools.

http://www.seagate.com/sg/en/support/downloads/seatools/

SeaTools Diagnostics

1.) It is suggested to close all other applications before running hard disk diagnostic, in order to keep the drive focused on SeaTools as much as possible.

2.) Please keep the computer fully powered on. Power management controls may need to be suspended while doing very long tests. Make sure you have the computer plugged in by power supply to a main wall socket.
Click on the Start or Windows icon button in the bottom left corner of your Windows desktop.
Select Control Panel.
Select Power Options.
Select “Change plan settings”
Select “Change advanced power settings”
Expand the Hard Disks in this window
The setting “Turn off hard disk after” should be set to “Never” while running any SeaTools for Windows test.
3.) Select the Drives to Test. Seagate, Samsung, LaCie, and Maxtor drive models are all supported drives. Please safely remove all other hard drives except the drive(s) that you want to test.

4.) Select the Tests to Run. A menu of the possible diagnostic tests is shown. Select the test that you would like to perform. You should backup all of your data before running tests that have options to “Fix”. The test will begin immediately. These tests include:
Fix all
S.M.A.R.T. check
Short Drive Self Test
Short Generic
Long Generic (progress in 1% increments and may take several hours to complete)
5.) Upon completion of running the diagnostics, a log for each drive is saved to the program installation folder. You can read the log by clicking on Help>View Log File. You can also view a log about the test results by clicking on either “Pass Info”or “Fail Info”, depending on the results of the test, when the test is done next to the “Help” option. Then you will see three tabs: “Pass Info”, “Warranty Checker”, and “View Log File."

Seems that your disk is having some hardware failure or firmware corruption.

As long you cannot get the PC to recognize your disk, software recovery programs are of no help.

Consider seeking professional data recovery help if data is important to you.

i cant seems to run the seagate tools , since it freeze my system . :(

i think @Louisloo could be right about hardware failure for the disk. If it's important data, no choice have to go seek professional help...but it's going to be very expensive.

To be honest, even buying the most reliable and reputable HD brand/model out there will not totally eliminate odds of failure.

Rule of thumb for important data:

1) Back up 2nd copy with a harddisk of a different brand and model
2) Back up 3rd copy on cloud.

People only learn the importance of data backup when they lose it. I learnt that lesson 10 years ago.
