Hi everyone,

Sorry if this is an old topic. I am moving into my new BTO in two months and I need your opinion on what internet provider to get. My unit if fibre ready and I will most likely go for a 1gb fibre connection (to be upgraded to 2gb or more in the future when I have money). I do game a bit and I watch tons of movies online. So waiting for them to buffer is a real (first world) problem.

Maybe I was living under a rock till now, but I didn't know I had so many choices. So anyone has any recommendations or horror stories regarding ViewQwest, MyRepublic, Singtel, Starhub or M1 when it comes to broadband?

Any response will be appreciated. Thank you.

1Gbps is more than enough.

If you want to read on the horror story, go to the sub forum NGBN

It may not be true that you have a lot of choices if you do watch pay Tv because it is either Singtel or Starhub la. I watch Starhub Tv so take Starhub la.

Actually, I am not planning to get a TV connection. Most of the time, I watch stuff online.

I see. Then you can try M1 which is good. Actually all are watching online but Pay Tv is from official channels while Android Tv box is from unofficial channels. Android Tv box usually not as clear as Official Pay Tv channels but not always the case.

Each ISP do have its own advantage and disadvantage at the same time.

The most important point is what is your intention on having internet.

For simple surfing and with TV (if decide at a later stage) there are only Singtel and Starhub.

Some ISP do have Gamer plan, but even non gamer plans able to do online gaming.
But there is only on selected online games, hence do be specific and each ISP may cater differently for selected online games.

according to this forums

starhub

occasional DNS issue (use another DNS server)
IPV6 unreliable

SingTel
Only provide ONR so you can't use your own router.
No static IP option
mostly reliable except the 24 hours of downtime last year.

M1
mostly reliable
recently seems to have a DNS issue
personally I only experienced 2 down times from my 3+ years using M1
both late at night and solved within 30 mins.

Myrepublic

seems to be reliable
no IPV6
uses a carrier grade NAT(your public IP is shared with other users) unless you pay for a static IP address.

Viewquest
seems to be the most unreliable according to the forum here
has freedom DNS but also seems to be unreliable
free static IP

Each ISP do have its own advantage and disadvantage.

Depends if you are looking into Customer service or How stable is the internet.

Thank you. This was a nice summary. Do you also have any comments about the speed and how much it fluctuates for each of these ISPs?

None.. I am staying in NUS hostel and use the NUS wifi. Before that, my rental place used to have Starhub cable broadband. Never used fibre before.

Speeds are dependent on the services and location of the server. If you download games from steam, you can easily max out your bandwidth. Dowload a file from Romania? Probably will be under 20Mbps.

1Gbps is plenty of bandwidth. A 4K YouTube stream will take up only 25Mbps. You will will have to open 40 4K streams to run out of bandwidth.

Most ISP are similar to each other in terms of speed.

If you intend to watch cable tv or other countries tv programs, you will likely take-up Starhub or Singtel TV with their fibre broadband.

If you just watch free-to-air channels (ch8, ch5, suria, cna, CHu, Vas or okto) you can get M1 as it is the cheapest and reliable. Previously I was with Singtel with miotv, cancelled and moved to m1 as we do not watch miotv (known as Singtel TV now).

1gbps is good enough, 2gbps probably only in the next 5 years, cos all Smart tv, computers that connect via ethernet maxed at 1gbps. Only higher-end computer supports up to 10gbps.

I can only feedback using M1 fiber home broadband for more than 6+ years, started with 100 Mbps to 200 Mbps to 300 Mbps and lately using M1 500 Mbps plan. I am pretty satisfied with M1 fiber broadband with consistent download/upload speed test with very little or no issue for the daily 10 -14 hours of usage.

ONT and Linksys wireless router is at the corner (fixed bad location) of my study room and TV at the hall. Most of the time, casting drama and movies to my Chromecast dongle at the hall without any issue at all, i.e., smooth streaming of web online HK dramas and movies. In fact, 100 Mbps plan is more than enough for me.

Both PCs are always having wired connection with good connecting speed.

Using Quad9 dns 9.9.9.9 (primary) and Cloudflare dns 1.0.0.1 (secondary), with dns setup on my router. Choice of dns for me was based on DNS benchmark test result.

@TS currently are using prepaid or postpaid plan? Under which telecom?

The reason why I'm asking this is because u can get some discount if u take their internet plan as well. (That is if I are on postpaid plan, if prepaid any ISP is fine.)

But tbh, some stuff are 1 off event and do not let that 1 event makes u thinking is the worst. They all have a lot of rooms for improvement as the days goes by. (And they have their reputation to think of as well:s8:)

Lastly to add on is that u should be concerned about the daily usage. (Go read up their sub forum for more info ;))

Can only say for SH.
Another rock solid year with zero internet disconnection/lag.
Just sign my 3rd contract with SH for another 24mths
-free 1GB mobile bb
-free TV box to watch free channels

To achieve this, you need to do some homework

1. Go for 3rd party DNS ,
eg OpenDNS Familyshield which is my favorite when using DIR-868L which auto configure it for you is you enable Parental control. However, don't know why Dlink remove it in the firmware 1.2.1SHC
Pri :208.67.222.123
Sec:208.67.220.123

Now using Linksys, trying out others DNS
1. Cloudflare 1.1.1.1 or
2. Quad DNS 9.9.9.9 or
3. Google DNS 8.8.8.8

2. Occasional do speedtest

3. Occasional MTU test (max 1500)
ping www.google.com.sg -f -l 1470 (expect no error)
ping www.google.com.sg -f -l 1480 (expect errors)

ping www.google.com.sg -f -l 1471 (expect no error)
ping www.google.com.sg -f -l 1472 (expect no error)
ping www.google.com.sg -f -l 1473 (expect errors)

4. Dual band wifi do not mix
5Ghz band wifi - 802.11ac only
2.4Ghz band wifi - 802.11n only

5. Locate router at the Centre of home so coverage is 90% and above.
