Looking for a laptop with the following specifications or higher.. Need model recommendations and price guide if available.

Processor: Intel i5 series 2.4GHz
Memory: 4GB RAM
HDD: 500GB
Optical Drive: DVD-ROM
Network Card: 10/100/1000
Wireless: Built-in Wireless supporting 2.4GHz and 5.0GHz frequency band
Graphics Card: NVIDIA Geforce GT620M 1GB


Would like to have a rough gauge on the prices of models falling into the above specifications.

Looking out for 8GB memory and maybe a HDD with higher storage capacity.

If you're taking a 'computing' related course a 620m might sound fishy cos it's a very low end GPU. Best you go find out what kind of programs exactly will u be running and how demanding they may be on the hardware.

In fact most consumer notebooks out there would actually exceed this 620m if im not mistaken

Maybe u wanna share what is your budget? That might be the min requirement for your course, but i think if budget permits, u can consider getting a better laptop since upgrading along the way is going to be very limited.

if i were you i rather gun for a Intel 4000 instead of a under-powered 620M - for a more expensive pricetag for nothing (just because the word "Nvidia" is there does not equate to a gaming machine)

I bought it mainly its light weight and slim but am not use to Windows8 at all and not like it resulting it being under-use. I'm selling it and probably get a Windows7 laptop.

I think below 1.4K will allow you to get laptops with decent hardware. Go to say Funan and take a look around. Harvey Norman there is a good place to start since they are pretty competitive when it comes to pricing.

Chances of you getting a new laptop running Win 7 is pretty slim now. Aftershock do give you the option between the 2. Most pre-assembled laptops out there don't give you a choice, unless you get your own Win 7 OS.

Thanks for the advise, if need be I'll go for an old model. Aftershock is more for gamers I think which I'm not. But seriously, after having it for weeks, I'm still sticking to desktop mode and still miss the old OS where I can find all my files easily. Just dun feel right to pay so much for a feature I dun use.

I just bumped into this forum and saw ppl going for the new OS and is a simple logic to trade what you think would benefit both ways, isn't it?
Anyway this machine is just not suitable for me and I'll be happy to sell it at a loss to a rightful owner who I'm sure will make full use of it.

It is much easier and cheaper to buy a copy of win7 and do a clean format on your existing laptop compare to hunting for a win7 laptop when the market is already fully into win8 at this time.

I bought a $1475 Aftershock laptop which you can never tell is a gaming laptop except for 2 things:
1. The very slightly conspicuous silver branding sticker on the front.
2. It's so damn fast (i7 3630M, Geforce 650M)

But seriously, after having it for weeks, I'm still sticking to desktop mode and still miss the old OS where I can find all my files easily.

Then I stumbled onto Start Menu software like Startisback, Classic Shell and Start8. These allow you to continue using Windows 8, which is definitely more optimised than Windows 7 in the technical aspects, but regain the old and familiar Start Menu. I now NEVER use the Windows 8 Start Screen and apps unless I want to play Solitaire or Tower of Hanoi.

Classic Shell is free, the other 2 come at a minimal fee. Chump change compared to a laptop's price. I was one of those who bought Windows 8 at only $18 though. I would give Startisback a slight edge in recommendation over Start8.

The new 14" Dell Vostro 5460 is out. Seems quite good for the price, though I wonder if they skimped on the cooling because of the suspiciously light weight given the materials NOT used (carbon fibre / fibreglass).
