Hi all

I'm looking to get a notebook roughly around 1k. Willing to stretch budget to 1.2k.

Will be using notebook mainly for emails, Microsoft Office, and occasionally some online video streaming/YouTube. Will need at least 500gb storage an optical drive and SD card reader. Not sure if possible, but an SSD would be good as well.

Any suggestions on what brand, model etc to decide from?

Thanks!:)

Majority of notebooks these days come with 500GB and a SD card reader.
However SSD at $1k is impossible despite SSD is cheap these days.
My advice, get a decent notebook this coming CEE exhibition
and get a 256GB Sandisk X300 SSD.

Sandisk X300 SSD is a power efficient SSD suitable with use
with notebooks.
Ask them to help you install the SSD inside but please take
note that they won't do the OS installation for you.
You will have to setup the notebook from scratch.

It is possible to get a laptop with reasonably decent specs close to 1k, but I expect it to come with a mechanical 1TB drive. You can spend that extra 200 bucks budget to get a new SSD from the likes of Lazada or Qoo10. 200+ is close to getting you a 500GB SSD.

At $1.2k, you can actually get something pretty good. :)

Consider through these factors before deciding:
1) Do you carry around often?
If yes, then weight and battery life is important.
-> Look out for ultrabooks such as Asus Zenbook, Acer S7, Dell XPS, Lenovo Yoga series
2) Do you play 3D games?
If yes, go for gaming models with a GTX graphics.
3) Do you need for multimedia?
If yes, go for larger screen models with FHD resolutions.

Generally, if for word processor, just get an i5 and upgrade to SSD as suggested by others.
That will do the job.

Thanks! Yes I carry it around daily. No games will be played on it, but will stream videos online once in awhile.

I need the following:

1) min 12" display
2) Optical DVD drive
3) Wlan card
4) 500GB storage
5) SD card reader
6) Win 7/10
7) Min 4gb ram

The problem nowadays is that most notebooks don't come with a DVD drive...

Yes. Optical drive is a major issue. Those light weight ones doe not have ODD. You probably have to go for business models like HP 640 G1. Weighs around 2.3kg. 14" with DVDRW.
