Hey peeps,

I am intending to get the 2560 x 1440 Asus ROG PG278Q Monitor

My current set up

Mobo: Asus Maximus VI Hero
CPU: Intel 4770K
GPU: Sapphire 280x Dual X
Ram: Corsair 8gb x 2
Cooler: Corsair H100i
PSU: Corsair AX850 Gold

I would like to try to get the best out of the monitor so I have been considering these 2 options

1) Buy another 280x for Crossfire
2) Buy 2 x GTX 770 4gb for SLI

I am open to any other suggestions too.
Would really appreciate your input.

Many thanks in advance:)

That monitor cost hell a lot..

Since you got 280x liao, just get another 280x. Or go for Xfire 290.

Since you are gonna pay more than 1k for the Asus ROG PG278Q

Just consider a dual gtx780 or r9 290 instead. Not unless you go for just 60hz then a single 780 or r9 290 could be used.

Yes the monitor is G sync. That is why I am considering making the switch to Nvidia.

I love the GTX 780 but I am worried that the 3gb even in SLI might not be sufficient if im looking at pushing the monitor.

The 290 has 4gb which is definitely sufficient however I don't wanna waste not being able to utilize the G sync.

Will SLI GTX770 4gb be sufficient?

Sufficient in VRAM, but not sufficient in horsepower. 780 3gb is more than good enough, though you may need to go for SLI if you wanna push for 1440p 120FPS @ 120Hz

You have no choice but to get a Nvidia card. GTX770 4GB sli is more powerful than a GTX690. You can go that route instead. Or bomb a GTX Titan SLI.

Titan SLI is of cos a dream.. My GF will kill me though..

the 290 CF seems really tempting. But then G sync is making me think twice.. hais..

Will definitely get the GPU first. Monitor probably later part of the year. Also dunno when will be released here..

Lai Lai, anymore opinions/suggestions?

This will make a good thread on how to maximize 1440 monitors

Once u decide on GPU, your monitor is most likely to follow suit, meaning you can use Gsync or not. Although that ASUS monitor can still be used, just that Gsync cant be used nia. Still gt lightboost.

He targetting 1440p 120hz.

If cannot use Gsync mean no 120hz,then no point buying it,normal 1440p will do

He isn't even buying the monitor yet. Nor is it available in singapore. He should only get a new gpu when he gets the monitor. Who knows? maybe maxwell 20nm already released. Its not like r9 280x not enough for 1080p

Not really, still can use 120hz... Just that to activate Gsync, you need nvidia cards. But, then again gsync is mainly for low fps, not high fps, so as to stabilise the fps along with the hz.

But, if so, that would be defeating the purpose of getting gsync.

If he decides to get AMD cards, getting a Gsync monitor would be redundant. What's worst is that it will be priced very high.

My opinion is to decide on which monitor you gonna get, and from there see which gpu fits it. Dun get both ends which dun match up very well and end up not using the main function and wasting your $$$.

My stand is to get 2 x GTX 780 for SLI despite the hefty cost (since you can afford to burn) for best 120 Hz experience and minimal stutter.

Is it wiser to change gpu first? Or get monitor then change gpu?

Cos my thinking was get the gpu first then when get monitor can straight away fully use the monitor.
If get monitor first i will be stuck playing on lower settings until i get the gpu.

Just my thoughts, feel free to speak ur thoughts

Edit cos wanted to add that i confirm want that asus monitor.. ROG fanboy.. hehe

Firstly, decide u want to go for 1080p or 1440p.

Secondly, decide you want 60hz or 120/144hz.

Thirdly, decide you want 60fps or 120fps most of the time on very high end games.

I would use these sequence for myself, and from there, you can decide which gpu to match. With that said, nvidia card will fit the bill since it allows gsync as well in which amd dun. But it will be much more expensive.

Since you confirm die die will get that monitor even if it costs S$1499 and above, then it would be good to get nvidia cards. 780 x2 SLI would be good enough.
