Need PC advice Pls
Hi guys.

Currently have a HP all in one touchsmart desktop which is frankly lousy. It is 5 years old but has given me problems for the last 3 years. It overheats and the monitor goes blank. I have been advised that the problem is due to poor design and not worth repairing. I do nothing more than surf, read, watch an occasional movie on my PC. I use it mainly for work and I bought it on purpose for the large 24" screen.

Want to buy a desktop. Shd I get one at comex or get one custom made? What brand to consider? Where to find someone reliable to custom make my PC?

Already have notebook, ipad. But I want something big on my desk to work with.

Pros and cons of brand name desktop:
Can go up to 5yrs wty, on site wty for first yr or so. Tends to use cheaper / not so durable components esp motherboard. Casing used sometimes bad airflow sometimes very good, depending on brand n design. Bundled with oem software hence u save some money. But they will also load so much junk wares that slows the system. If u r a noob, u will appreciate their system recovery image and also how they have tuned up the os for updates n features. They also give free accessories like keyboard n mouse n may bundle in monitor. If they are good, they may allow adding or topping up to ssd n more ram. Depending on brands, they may even create another partition for u to save data.

Pros and cons of diy/custom software:
U can choose exactly what motherboard, chipsets and components going into your pc. Whether there's any bottleneck in hardware and casing airflow or heat problem, all depends on your own skills. If pc got problem, u need to research n solve it yourself most of the time. Wty only restricted to the individual components (some 1 yr some 2 yrs some 5yrs), and where u may need to take out n return it to distributor. U probably need to purchase software like os n install it yourself or paying someone to do it.

beside that whats your budget?

if u dun want to have the time to fix/troubleshoot your system, u can consider getting dell ready-build pc during comex show.

if u can fix/troubelshoot, i think u can find fortan in the forum, he help people build full diy system.

reuse the monitor and connect it to the laptop. buy or reuse a wireless keyboard and mouse and you can leave the laptop closed.

Most AiO don't have a video/HDMI in. And even if so, it can still shut down.

Why don't TS send the AiO for cleaning and reapply of thermal paste and see if the overheating issue can be solve?

Or run get speedfan to monitor the temperatures, then decide what to do....

I was looking at the Dell website. My budget is $1500. Dont want to overspend like I did with my HP AIO. which with extended warranty was $2800
I am really noob and dont want a hassle with my pc down the road. I rather thought that the guy who'd build my PC would be the trouble shooter, doesnt work like that ma?

Which brandnames are reliable?

The thing about going down the route of a custom build PC is that any potential warranty claim needs to be made against the respective distributors/manufacturers of each individual component. The person who you engage to build it is not liable to troubleshoot for you. He may do that during the initial stages right after the build but it is highly unlikely he will troubleshoot for you one or two years down the road. If you are not comfortable with that I suggest going for an AIO PC might be more suitable.

You could always buy a tv and monitor to put on your desk, and output laptop from there. no need new pc

1, my laptop also HP and i am very wary of depending on HP.

2, Want less clutter on my worktop.

anyway computer is like heng swag, even most branded brands also have some suffering, causes due to the technologies itself have limitations. beside that we cant tell if the pc have issues down the road until it appears.

anyway fortan only provide DIY build and can give u reco for a upgrade, but not help u troubleshoot nor upgrade for your pc. even those SLS shops, they also wont provide u such services with 1 or 2 years down the road.

well as what derkasiser94 had mentioned, they will help u on inital stages. but some years later, they would preferred that sort this issues with the distro rather them.

since you already have a laptop, can use it to output to a nice new monitor first

after that, if you find you still want a desktop, can look to purchase custom made, brand name or even NIC

last I looked on brand name for relative, all have short warranties of 1 year.
Can pay more to extend the warranty.
