Hi there,

Would really love some help here, it's been so long since i bought a diy PC and when i finally get one, i get annoyed.

So here's the problem:
My system tends to freeze and spike up(on DPC latency checker) whenever i install a new software on my system & in some other isolated cases, it freezes for a quick 1-2 secs with a buzzing sound then it returns to normal. Sadly I can't recall those isolated cases, but i can definitely recreated the freeze during installation of software.

PC Specification:
Asus B85- Pro Gamer
Intel Core i7 4790
Corsair RM850 PSU
CORSAIR 16gb Vengeance (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1600 CL9
Sapphire R9 290 4gb vapor-x (14.4 driver)
WD 2TB Black WD2003FZEX 3.5" INT SATA
Windows 7 64bit Ultimate SP1

Things I have done:
  • RMA - Motherboard
  • MEMtest (PASSED)
  • Tried 13.12 driver on gfx card & couple of others, currently on 14.4.
  • Swapped out Graphic card to my old HD7870
  • Updated all intel INF, MEI, ASUS bios & all related drivers to the latest.
  • Used Western Disk Data Life Diagnostic - (PASSED)

My next option is to try to RMA my processor chip, ram, gfx card, HDD, power supply. Have done all that i can on the software side, perhaps i should have went old school and did all those bottleneck test with the multipliers and such but sadly i didn't and didnt expect this annoying thing to happen.

Any input on this matter is greatly appreciated, feel free to shoot questions my way.

Thank you so much in advanced.

Basic troubleshooting should at least identify where the problem lies. I hope you at least tried a fresh installation of Windows before RMAing your mb?

Try the following diagnostic steps:

Install basic system with just onboard video/fresh install of windows and one ssd(boot drive) and one stick of RAM. (Do not install video card, additional harddrive etc yet) Install all drivers with the latest from the respective manufacturer websites. Test.

If that problem resurfaces, you've just narrowed down the failure to either the ssd or psu (probably not mb since you've already RMAed)

Keep adding components one by one and retesting until you find out where the problem is. You mention buzzing sound. Can you isolate where the sound is coming from? PSU? MB? etc?

No point just blindly RMAing everything because it could also be just a software issue as well.

Sadly, I already tried all these, as for the buzzing i need to check again. I wonder how unlucky could i get that i got another faulty motherboard. haha:s13:

I sincerely doubt that its a faulty mb. Too specific an issue and to manifest in two boards, the odds are exceedingly long.

So you're saying with a fresh install and just running onboard video and with just the ssd and 1 stick of ram, you're already encountering these sudden freezes? If you just did a fresh install with all components still plugged in, its not the same since it could be driver/IRQ conflict or even poor wiring connection somewhere.

If so, then like I said, you've narrowed it down to PSU and SSD. Buzzing sound indicates likely PSU issues, but the split second freezes feel more like an ssd/harddrive issue. Make sure you have SATA mode on your bios in AHCI mode and try changing sata cable. Try using another PSU if you have one lying around, and maybe install your os on the magnetic hdd to narrow down further.

DIY is a pain in the ass to troubleshoot, but if you do it systematically its usually simple if time consuming to at least isolate what's wrong

oh oops, didn't realize you're just using the WD black with no ssd.
Try using another drive.
