Need recommendation for 4-bay NAS

Synology can meet 1, 2 & 4 requirement. Doubt any in the market now capable of playback 4K video.

Just curious.. You have 4k TV/monitor and 4k content?

Maybe you can separate up your devices... Just have a normal NAS for storage and BT.

Then have a HTPC that can play 4K.... Cos for a NAS to play 4K... You probably need a fair bit of horsepower in terms of CPU and GPU. And you also want a good sound card to connect to a soundbar or HiFi for a complete home theatre.

Just got a 4k tv and was thinking of investing on a NAS thats future ready.
If thats the case , which 4 bay NAS would you recommend that can meet 1,2,4 as there's quite a number of options when i went to SLS.
Synology, Qnap, Asusstor, Thecus.. preferably has XBMC

I am a rare QNAP fan here... Most people here will probably tell you Synology. For QNAP, you will be looking at the 469 which has a HDMI connection and HD Station with XBMC built in. Synology probably have a similar model. I would think either brand is fine.

I still prefer splitting devices, so if NAS dies, I still can watch. (Backing up NAS is very important). Any of my XBMC machine dies, I also can watch. Plus I don't have to put my NAS beside the TV. I also have multiple XBMC players accessing the same NAS. I also don't need to invest in a expensive NAS.
My setup is a simple QNAP 212P, purely just storage, BT and QSync + QCloud (Dropbox like features).
My XBMC machines are Minix Neo X7, laptop with HDMI and my PC. Works well for me.

I think requirement 3 is not necessary in the NAS but rather in the XBMC machine outputing the graphics.
Rather for future ready nas for 4K, i think it should have a teaming intel nic to stream the 4k content without lag.

about 1.8k for the enclosure and with upgrade to 4gb ram .. was contemplating the 469 PRO but just decided to invest on a much higher processor for long term

Good choice but not cheap! I am also comtemplating a QNAP for exactly to serve the same things you did.

Did you consider the 5 bay sys.?

I have few times of 4 bay sys, when 1 HDD failed. your heart beat fast while they are rebuilding...(ya... i should have proper backup disciplince... but we know why...) My Onnto 4-bay DAS has HDD failed twice... my once-very-good ReadyNAS has failed also....

(BTW, right now, NAS I have the syno 1812+ and Drobo 5N)

i'll stay with 4 bay for now as i've another Syno DS213 and replicate the data as backup once awhile ..my Readynas DUO still going strong thou
