Was thinking of getting a Macbook Pro or Macbook Air around that $1500 range or other laptop at around that price range. I'm more of a windows user.

Prefer 8gb of ram though so maybe Macbook ain't gonna work.
Also need a good(no need to be excellent) screen as the previous lappy's screen is horrendous and hurts my eyes, but it's a cheap $800 Asus laptop.
A SSD+ HDD combo is ok.

My previous Asus has the following if I remember correctly.
8gb ram, windows 8.1, 80gb SSD +500gb HHD, disk drive, 2.3kg.

Battery life is not an issue as I rarely bring it out but will move it around rooms so preferably light in weight.

Also, lifespan, my Asus lasted just 1 year... faint.

Any good recommendation is appreciated. Thank.
Will give more information if needed.

Hey guys, thank for the recommendations.
I have checked. My laptop was the ASUS K451LN-WX154H which cost just $800 last year at the road show.
It has a 14" display and I consider it too small already.
The specs are 8gb ram(free 4gb upgrade back then)
i5-4210U CPU@1.7GHz 2.40GHz ?(i have no idea why there are 2 displayed when I checked)
Windows 8.1
2.2Kg which is about fine for me since it's just moving around my home.
200GB SSD with 250GB HDD.
The only thing is the horrible screen.
The exact specs listed is different form mine

So with those updated details and $700 more, I can only get a 13" macbook pro?

no matter what is your specs with the S$700 it is not enough to get a retina macbook pro . There are many sharks here swimming around here. how much do you think your set can fetch? cheapest S$1699 retina non retina S$1488 but if you want better then S$1488 specs better non retina can pm me I can give you a good deal.

Actually, I do not specifically need a mac. Just that mac has better screen and lighter weight. I'm using an iPhone so ya it helps but that's about it.

I'm asking for a laptop that can match my current specs but with better lifespan(hopefully) and better screen. Not too much to ask for $700($1500+/-) more right?
Thank for the offer though, if I can't get anything better I might pm you.

How do I get education pricing anyway? I'm way out of school life.

Oh, and thank for the warning too. So far, no sharks yet perhaps they are wary of me too. haha.

trust me bro, im not an apple fan and i pretty much tried everything from the dell xps 13 to the yoga 2 pro to razer blade to surface pro 3..

nothing beats the macbook pro 13' retina (current version)

it has 12 hr batt life and all the computing power you will need..

windows 8 laptops are decent all around, but nothing comes close to being as polished and refined as a macbook pro..

u can use shopback for 1% cashback too.. u can get it for around $1550, which isn't cheap, but is very bang for buck..

however i havent had very good experience with them lasting very long, usually after 2-3 years some parts will breakdown, i have one with a broken wifi and another with a finicky hard drive, both are relatively easy to fix but they are the old models, easily upgradeable. the new ones basically cannot open and touch one.
