GPU just crunked, so finally forced to upgrade :(

This is what I have left now.
AMD Phenom 920
MSI DKA790 Mobo
4gb ram
Samsung SSD 850 Evo 500gb
Andyson 650w PSU

Looking for a change in CPU/RAM and GPU, not sure if its necessary to change the PSU. Would keep it as-is if possible.

Hoping to keep it to $800 if possible, up to $1k if the additional $200 makes a big difference.

using it for gaming, total war type games.

ram's gotta go definitely.. its ddr2 lol.

my psu think got 4-5 yrs le. its the Andyson F650W if not mistaken. If the connectors are still relevant, i'd just keep it till it kaputs.

used to use a msi 4870 hd.

games wise: total war, d3, civ5, been playing mostly older games as i've been holding back the upgrade for quite a while.

also looking to play things like ac, witcher, gta. not really a fan of fps games though.

Hmmm.. I can probably shave off the wdblue, dvd writer and casing as these will be using existing.

For futureproofing sake, worth it to get to a newer gen cpu with ddr4 or should I get a better gpu?

Save the money and get better gpu. If can get gtx 970 will be good. Otherwise go for gtx 960.

I think ram just get ddr3 value ram from kingston/crucial can already. Around $60.

If you want more cpu power, get i5 4460 enough. But if on tight budget focus on gpu first.

I recommend these:

Mobo + CPU: Asrock H81m-HDS + i5 4460 (335)
Ram: Kingston 8gb value ram (61)
GPU: Zotac 970 twin fan (479)
PSU: FSP Aurum S 500W (99)

Reuse SSD, HDD, DVD and Casing

Total: $974 from PC Theme Pricelist. Bargain for discount or buy some of the items during lazada promotion.

Some monitor like benq 144 hz, is it possible to tune it down also?

Let's say I run CSGO, fps confirm
Can go more than 144. So it's fine.
But high end games that only run less than 80fps..?
Will there be screen tear?

Don't know. But 96 hz easily, just change the option only. Higher speed need special mods or software I think. Never try.

:s22: uplorry le

thanks all for the response.

any reason for going for haswell with ddr3 instead of ddr4 and skylake?

They are cheaper. Not much performance gains if you go DDR4 and Skylake. Since you on tight budget might as well focus on the GPU first because most games are more GPU intensive.
