Need recommendation for rig upgrade

Hi all,

This is my current rig setup:

Msi H97 Gaming 3 + i5-4460
MSI Radeon R9 290 4GB
Gskills Ripjaws 1600mhz 2x4gb kit
samsung evo 840 250GB SSD
WD Blue 1tb Storage Drive
Seasonic S12G 650W
Fractal design arc midi

Looking to upgrade the rig to support gaming and use of VMs.
Thus, would probably need to upgrade to 32GB of ram and another 2TB of storage disk.

What components will need to be replaced to support my needs? TIA!

would recommend changing to ryzen. means your mobo, cpu and ram need change. probably ryzen 3600, b450 mobo combo at the bare minimum?

gaming + vm concurrently? i think you need more ram and bigger ssd capacity (if your vm folder is stored locally)..

thanks for the reply. if im gaming, i will shutdown the VMs. Im intending to get 32GB of ram. What ram will be good? will be mobo cpu able to support 32gb ram? I intend to store the vm at my secondary storage with 2tb capacity. Do i need to upgrade my graphics card? Thanks!

budget is not an issue. Just want to get the best out of it to suit my needs.

You can get Ryzen 5 3600 + B450 mobo. Or you can go Newegg and get a Ryzen 7 2700 + B450 mobo. 2700 for more cores over 3600.

If budget is not an issue then just get Ryzen 9 3900 with a X570 mobo. 32GB no issue. If you need more, can get 64GB memory.

r9 290 is just enough for 1080p60 gaming today. really up to u if u wanna upgrade in preparation for 1440p gaming, or simply for power efficiency gains. anyway nowadays 570s, 580s and 1060s going for cheap also.

As mentioned, go for Ryzen because you want to use VM thus cores/threads is a big factor for you. My budget recommendation is Ryzen 5 3600, less budget choice is Ryzen 7 3700.

For main board, budget will be Asrock B450M Pro4, less budget will be MSI B450 Tomahawk Max.

For ram, you can get 3200Mhz CL16 2*8gb. The brand don't really matter, just grab whatever cheapest you can source with that specification.

For gaming, seeing your monitor is 1080p, minimum recommendation is 1660 Super or you can also get 2nd hand 1070. 1440p recommendation is 5700xt or 2060 super, whatever cheaper.

Your SSD, PSU, Casing and HDD all can be reused.

2 rams will also provide less stress to the system, it also use less voltage, the system is overall more stable.
Therefore 2*8gb is always recommended.

if really want to upgrade to 1440p panel then must upgrade gpu le, but at least used 1070/tis are pretty cheap nowadays. can also look at used vegas, or if u r looking at brand new options, 5700/xt or 2060 super.

Only me . Still sticking to gtx 1060 .
Nothing worth it now to upgrade.
Nivida nowdays keep rebranding it's cards with minimal improvement also .

TS mentioned use for VMs. Go for 2*16gb 3200mhz CL16 instead, is just ~$80 more from Amazon. WIth 32gb memory one can open multiple VM instances (4gb ea) and still multitask/tabs/video without any issue
