need recommendations for possible upgrades

Smelt burnt plastic burn from rig cant really isolate where it came from. Tot i might as well upgrade (3rd yr anyway)

Suspect for smell is mb/psu so those 2 confirm replace.

X370 or x470 the different just the ram speed increased and some feature add on..
Get whatever you can affort as ur need since you not going to oc but will u game?

The psu i recommend the seasonic 650w gold series de as its cheaper gold series psu..
If you not OC dont take 2600 x series, tske those no X or 2200 G series if u wanna onboard gpu too..

Fallout 4 without HD dlc, using mods 1060/rx570 should be more than enough..
As for multi tasking, amd cpu are good in multi threads..
The x series are for unlocking more OC potential cpu if you using for decent usage i rather u take those 2600 instead and save money for m.2 ssd for faster RW..

Depending on stock batch. But by now, all boards should be updated enough to support 2000 series CPU/APU. Most ppl I've heard or help with their rig, new board come with bios version that support the 2000 series. So it should work out of the box, but it still may not be the LATEST BIOS

Take note of the Ryzen 2000 series ready sticker on the mobo. This should certify its bios is Ryzen 2000 series ready.

Actually it's nonexistent for Windows 7 driver for current new system. If have (I doubt so), you probably have a heck of issues with it.

Thanks for the advice so far. I think i may get a fractal design core 500 casing to replace the elite 130 as its likely the psu making the smell. noisy like hell also.........

If quiet is what you want, you will need a 3rd party cooler instead of the box Wraith Stealth. It's good enough at stock, but on load it will be slightly noisy. Plus, you can't overclock much with it too. Using Ryzen, mild overclocking will give you good performance for day to day work and gaming without hurting anything.

Consider Cryorig H7 for quiet. Or Cooler Master Hyper 212 for the more budget option but you will need to tweak the fan curve for quieter operation.

Shop should have the AM4 mounting backplate for you. Since you're purchasing a cryorig cooler with AMD Ryzen CPU and mobo, it will come free usually. Otherwise, might need to go Corbell to collect with the invoice of your purchase.

Ryzen 5 won't be high TDP lol. Even the X variant, is not hot at all as compared to Intel which uses lousy TIM and need to be delidded for better temp performance and that voids warranty. Ryzen CPU are soldered to the IHS. You won't need to undervolt to control the heat. The 2nd gen, typically 1.35V should be enough to hit 4.0GHz all 6 cores. You just gotta play with the Vcore and LLC to find your balance for the optimal speed. 4GHz should be easily achievable with tower cooler like the H7.

If ultimately you don't want to overclock for peace of mind, the single core boost clock can reach 3.9ghz which is plenty okay nonetheless and using aftermarket cooler will be cool and quiet.
