Need recommendations on upgrade

Hi all,

Need some recommendations on the upgrade path for me.

I am planning to do some streaming soon. Thinking to change the motherboard, CPU and ram.

As I am not a heavy user, I am thinking to upgrade to a 5600x and a B550 motherboard. Ram choice, what is the recommended frequency sticks to buy? Thinking to go 16gb (2x8gb for dual channel) with potential to upgrade to 32gb in the future.

Will be reusing my current HDD and SSD, and maybe to buy another 1TB M.2 SSD for my games.

My current hardware is as such:

CPU and MB: i5 4460 with ASRock B85 Killer
GPU: Zotac Nvidia GTX 1070 AMP! Edition
RAM: Kingston Value DDR3-1600 CL11 32GB
Storage: Samsung SSDD 850 EVO 250GB (OS) + Samsung SSD 850 EVO 500GB (Games) + WD Blue 1TB (Data)
PSU: Super Flower Leadex Silver 650W
Case: Fractal Design Arc Midi R2

CPU, RAM and Mobo definitely need to change so can take advantage of GTX 1070.
Your storage configuration wise you can consider:
- M.2 SSD for both OS and games.
- Data on HDD

Cuz if you were to use SATA SSD for OS and M.2 for games.
The M.2 interface will be faster than SATA so should put OS on M.2 instead.
BTW OS have to be reinstalled on new motherboard, so can't plug into new motherboard.

Some may argue it will work but down the road wise you will face this BSOD.

Intel B85 and AMD B550 are not only different chipset but generation apart so recommend to reinstall OS.
Which B550 motherboard to choose depend on your budget,

Delay the full upgrade till prices go back to normal

TS you can consider upgrade with mentioned budget and windows 11 coming soon do try to have a look at it's feature if it interest you for your future upgrade.

Now you are using ddr 3 memory of 32 gb then in future upgrade also please consider 32GB, but ddr5 is coming soon

My CPU and MB is too old liao, which is the priority to change for now. GPU I am holding back until the prices drop before I go for the 3000 series card. Thanks for the advise though!

Separately, what kind of ram stick is recommended? From what I read the frequency is one thing, but the speed of the ram is another. Any recommendations here?

Yup excited for Windows 11, but not too sure if I will jump in on the upgrade immediately as Windows 10 is still very stable for now. I will wait for the gaming features for Windows 11 to be stable before making the jump!

And yes, for my ram I will be going to 32gb for sure, but to keep the budget manageable was thinking 16gb would be enough for now until when there is good promo for another 2 sticks of 8gb!

Might as well as get another SSD, Samsung SSD currently have promotion.
Can consider G.Skill Trident Z NEO 3200MHz CL16 for the AMD Ryzen setup.

I think you should just go for the Ryzen 5 5600X and a B550 board. AMD's upgrade path is better in a sense that if you think you want to skip next gen CPUs, you still have the option to get say a Ryzen 9 5900X if you need more processing power. Not sure what form factor are you considering, i.e. ATX, MATX or ITX, but I think for a decent motherboard, you can consider the MSI MAG series or Asus TUF series. The former may be more expensive because the local distro is charging too much in my opinion. The last time I got a MSI MAG B550m Mortar from a store who parallel imports his boards, I was charged 209 bucks with 2 years warranty from him. On the other hand, distro sets are easily 309 to 329 bucks for 3 years warranty. The last I check, this seller is now selling it for 189 bucks.

Oh cause I currently already have 2 x SSD and 1 x HDD which I am planning to reuse. But I also agree probably get the faster SDD for OS as well as for my main games to play.

DDR4-3200 or if budget permits DDR4-3600. Better RAM will allow you to sync the Ryzen IF at 3733 1:1 with an OC to DDR4-3733.

However, the difference is just a few % in performance so you have to decide whether it is going to be worth it. With DDR5 coming soon, probably not worthwhile to spend too much on DDR4 ATM.
