Need some help for my first gaming rig.

Hi, computer noob here who wants to build his first desktop computer for gaming and streaming.

I was recommended by a friend to ask here as he said that HWZ will be able to recommend the exact parts, but i will have to be specific about my requirements, so here goes nothing:

1) Need a desktop computer that is able to multi-task e.g. game and stream at same time. I will also be using this desktop for work, so i will need at least 32GB RAM and 4TB of storage (probably even more) to be safe.

2) play AAA games at 1440p at high settings. Will be gaming on 1440p 120Hz and above monitor.

3) hardware futureproof enough for 5 years; not intending to upgrade any parts along the way. I am able take some graphical downgrade in games as the time passes.

4) Expecting my budget to be around $4000 to $4500, i think this will be sufficient for a higher-end rig?

Hope the experts here can help me with a value for money build as i have no prior experience in building my own computer, thank you very much.

P.S. I will also appreciate it if anyone here can provide me reliable retailers/shops to get the computer parts from also.

1440p120 is generally attainable with 3080 level of performance. so in that case, will be possible to get a decent rig for about 2k, not including monitor or peripherals. but the performance will depend on the games u play, eg less demanding games can get cheaper gpu and still get 1440p120, so do share which games u intend on playing. also, is it urgent? quite a few next gen hardware launches around the corner, might be able to get more choice and better deals by the end of the year so it would be worth it to wait.

P.S. I will also appreciate it if anyone here can provide me reliable retailers/shops to get the computer parts from also.

i am also like u, trying to build a new rig (not first time though).....for u to play around first, i suggest going to one of those pre-built websites to spec a PC and see the cost..just for ur knowledge. U can use the US sites or even local sites (dreamcore, aftershock) for more "accurate" system pricing. Note some of these these pre-built system base setup generally dont use the more expensive components like popular brand RGB fans, AIO coolers, cases and even the m.2 drives brands.

And monitors are not in the pricing... anyway what i am seeing now is with the 4090..the trend now is 4k gaming....

ah, 1440p120 on cp2077 is only attainable with a 4090 at this point in time, which would certainly not help in a "value" rig. the 6950xt comes close at about 110fps, but is not quite ur target. so yeah, better to hold out for 4080/rdna3. chances are, if u get high end gpu from either manufacturer from the upcoming gen, u should be good for the next few years.

Still, i would love to be able to at least know what parts to buy before they are sold in SLS, hopefully you are able to assist on this?

i dont have a crystal ball, so if sls has no info on new parts i cant help u either. soon to be last gen parts that are currently still available can become solid value picks once next gen is available though, so that could still be an option if u are not dead set on being on the bleeding edge.

I have done some research from looking up Dreamcore and Aftershock, but yes i agree with you that 4090 and 4k gaming seems to be the hype nowadays.

I would say in IT world, it is hard to predict whether the current system u build can sustain for 5 years. Depend on the advancement of the IT in the future. Late 90s early 00s had to deal with monster leaps and graphics incompatibility issues of anything 2-3 yrs old. Today only issue is you need to turn graphics quality down. Everything design to work minimally on integrated graphics or very basic graphics card. No one is going to design games that cant run on 80% of the market. So issue is not a hard one like literally game cannot run (as years ago). It is only about what quality settings you willing to tolerate.

Still using the i7 4790k in 2022.

cpu doesnt affect much of gaming performance vs GPU....

however, cpu will speed up the loading time if the s/w utilize all the core of the newer processors.

I oso using i7-3770 b4 i upgraded to i7-10700 and nvme ssd. Its really show a big diff in faster loading time.

As long the game can run smoothly as u prefer, no nid to upgrade lor. I chose to upgrade bcoz I want to try Windows 11 and gaming with RT on.

I choose quality 1st, if the fps is too laggy, LL have to tone down the quality......lol
If I really enjoy playing the game, maybe I will upgrade the GPU to test the game if the price is right....^^
