Hey guys, my PC of 2years+ started acting up a few days ago. I tried narrowing down the issue however this is the first time i'm experiencing this, so here i am. Some specs before I explain:

Gigabye Z77X-UD3H + 3570k (currently running at stock)
8GBx2 ram (dual chn 1600 on xmp profile)
msi 7970 Power Edition
FSP Aurum 750
Windows 7 Home

Have not done any windows update or installed new graphics drivers for a while now. Only stuff that I have been downloading are games on Steam.

Okay, here are the details and the things i've tried:

1. PC couldn't boot up, there's power though.
2. Tried booting up a few times, somehow managed to and into windows. However windows is showing only 8GB ram. PC then crashed while at desktop.
3. Rebooted and checked BIOs, only 8GB ram detected here as well. Turned off and reseated both rams. BIOs now showing 16GB. Booted into windows no problem.
4. Restarted PC again. Now, for some reason it didn't made it past POST, instead i got a warning from the uefi saying that an error has occured with my BIOs settings and prompts me to load optimized defaults. This is weird because I have not changed any settings in 2years lol. I chose to load the optimized defaults anyhow, and proceeded to tweak the bios to what it was before. Saved and exited.
5. Booted into windows, same unpredictable crashing occurred, but now with the addition of artifacts on screen followed by 'AMD drivers stopped responding'. After a while, the PC would crash. GPU temperatures are at 38 idle and 65-75 when playing games. Thinking it might be caused by a dying gpu, however I proceeded to do memtest first and leave the gpu for last.
6. Tested the rams individually, no issue after 4~5 cycles each.
7. Tested them together, PC froze just after 5mins, but no errors indicated.
8. Thinking it might be a faulty ram slot, I decided to populate the other 2 slots instead. Same crashing and/or artifact problem occured when 2 rams are seated.
9. Tried disabling the xmp profile. It was stable for a couple of hours, but the same problems came back thereafter.
10. Decided to try using only one stick of ram. Somehow, the crashing and artifact issues disappeared totally, no issues at all for either sticks, and on any of the ram slots.

As of now, the PC is still working, can piak game with no problems, but the moment I add in the other stick of ram, the random crashing and on some occasion the artifacts come back :s22:

Anything else I should be trying?

You might want to try updating/reinstalling the MB BIOS.

Edit: It could be either a corrupt BIOS or MB problem preventing dual channel from working correctly. If the former, a BIOS update will fix the problem. If the latter, sell your two sticks of 8GB ram and buy a 16 GB ram. Problem solved. :)

Yup, it could be an outdated BIOS of the mobo.
Reflash it and see if it works!
