Need some help with cooling fan settings.

So I just bought an Asus ROG Strix Gt15 gaming desktop. Intel i7 10700KF, GTX 1660Super. In stock form, is only exhaust and cpu fan. Although the case is considered very airy and allows for alot of air but just to make sure, I added 3 cooler fans from ID cooling. My question is, what fan curve should I set all the fans to? (Cpu cooler, exhaust fan and 3 cooler fans). My idle temp is around 38deg to 40 deg.

The stock cpu cooler is not ideal for a i7 10700KF, it gets very hot and loud when load.

For case fans, just play with the settings to your liking, settings should have a good balance of airflow and noise.

Again, that's your choice. You decide the amount of noise you want Vs the cooling performance.

I know it is my preference but I'm asking about OPTIMUM curve. My preference won't necessarily mean that the cpu stays within a healthy range etc. That's why I'm asking for a rough optimum range. If I wanted to set it at my own preference i wouldn't be asking here. Thanks.

It depends on what %rpm are you okay with.
Assuming, 70% is the maximum you can take.

I'll set them to 30-40% at idle (say 40 deg). Surf internet abit, start up some programs and just have a monitoring software behind to see what are the spikes. Sometimes, the cpu will spike up to 60 deg or so for awhile. Your UEFI may have some ramp u delay settings which you can set to prevent the fans from ramp up and down for no particular reasons.

Next, turn on full load. Monitor the temps. Say at full load while gaming or something it max out at 70 deg. I'll set the fan curve to hit 70% rpm at 70 deg. The fan curve points in between can just set it to ramp up slowly.

ie.
40 deg - 40%
45 deg - 45%
50 deg - 50%
55 deg - 55%
60 deg - 60%
65 deg - 65%
70 deg - 70%

Something like that. You get the idea.

The optimal settings might really just being the presets in the BIOS.


If you want a custom fan curve, you should decide your CPU's "high threshold", i.e. the temperature you want your CPU to reach before spinning up aggressively for the cool down. This high threshold varies on the kind of use (i.e. whether its for gaming or non-gaming use, etc).


For me my high threshold is 55 degrees, so i spike the fan speed at 75% of its rated speed and put it into hysterisis (above 95% when it crosses 70 degrees)


You should then also consider a "consistent" or gradually increasing RPM for the lower temperature ranges such that your fan shouldn't need to adjust its RPM too much at the lower temperature ranges. I notice during IDLE my CPU fluctuates a lot between 40 degrees and 53 degrees so I concentrate more inflexion points to reduce the RPM variance in those ranges. This is a matter of trial and error to maintain the CPU at a small temperature range on idle, because every chip and configuration is done differently. I still admit I can't get this part right tho lol.


Others may have a different take on this though.

I see, I guess at the end of the day, still have to trial and error until satisfied! But thank you very much!

no such thing as optimum curve ar, because everyone's curve will be different inherently since the hardware is different for each. Different fan, different rpm, different CPU, idle load, case flow etc.

When people say you decide the noise vs cooling performance, thats what it really means. At which rpm does your fan noise bother you? Go test and find out. (mine is 1200rpm) Lower it a bit from that level so that you don't hear it bothering you when doing day to day tasks like watching movies etc.

Anything above 65-70deg (basically during full load like benchmarking or gaming) I basically go within 85-100%. Since I don't see a point in keeping temps above 70deg, so just run the fans at max to maintain the best cooling.

OPTIMUM doesn't equal to MAX OUT. Pretty basic. Jeez get back to school.

I think you need to go back to school because you also never said what "Optimium" means to you. So he was right to say 100% because optimum cooling would be at 100%. Anything else that involves a noise level you can tahan vs cooling performance is entirely "it depends on you" and your parts, environment, type of fans, placement of casing, etc. There is no "one size fits all" optimum setting other than "100% for cooling".

OEM casing normally does not cater for external fan fixing and does not have ideal dust filtering as custom pc casing.

if you do add on additional fans, please do note you might need to regularly maintain and clean up as the dust will be very soon pile up.

the faster your fans spin the louder your pc due to less sound proof and the faster dust will be accumulated.

I think your issue was not the casing air flow, but instead your CPU temp you are concern about and adding casing fan will not help your temp getting lower than your mentioned within 40c range.
