Need some help with upgrading gpu

Hi all.. New here sorry if i'm a noob but need some advice on upgrading gpu.

I am currently using a Palit Gtx 970 jetstream on a msi b150m mobo. Looking to upgrade to zotac gtx 1070 mini but got a few concerns with size and power connector

Zotac has Dual 6-pin to 8-pin PCIe adapter and is 210mm x 122mm

Palit is 6-pin X2 and is 247mm x 126mm


Does this mean fitting the Zotac will have issues with connectivity at the back? Like will I have to refit my entire mobo in the casing the sit the display inputs nicely at the back of my casing??

A friend of mine installed for me last time so I'm not too sure..

errm what matters more is your casing.

i am very sure your psu will come with a 8pin connector or at least dual 6 pins. the adapter will be provided with the zotac 1070 mini to convert the dual 6 pins to 8 pins.

changing gpu is easy. just remove and slot it, plug in additional power source and u are done.

ohh it's connected to the psu? I thought it was connected to the mobo haha

I'm using a mid tower Phanteks P400. There will be space. Just that I'm wondering if it will be awkwardly positioned.

You know what I mean? Like will there be a gap between the Zotac and the back of the casing?

positioning wouldn't be awkward. i assume u are replacing your gpu right? it's just a matter of taking it out and slotting the new one in its place. but your casing will look very empty given that the mini is a card designed for small rigs.

yeah bo bian... Stuck with a midtower with a matx mobo. But it's non-windowed so aesthetics-wise it doesn't matter. As long as it functions i've got no problem.

i generally dun see a problem with changing gpu unless it's about the power. but i think ur psu is a 500w rating? u should not have any issues with it if u can power the 970.

but yeah its a superflower 550w. my main concern was just whether it will leave a gap between the back of my casing and the zotac mini because of how much smaller it is compared to the palit 970

if you can run a 970, sure can run 1070. take note that zotac 1070 mini have a blackplate, so the height will rise abit above the pci-e slot, some motherboard (especially itx type) may have some connectors that is quite tight around there...

hmm i checked your mb, should be fine.

psu changing gpu. typo there.

actually more gap is better. promotes better airflow.

What are 2 slot cover? Hmm maybe I'll go home tonight and try and remove the gpu myself and see how it goes

The cards are measured from the output connector plate to the end of the cooler. All graphics card will line up to the back.
Only issue is which pic-e cover needs to remove which depends on mobo top pic-e slot and case alignment.

On sharkoon t28, my top slots on asrock board lines up nicely to second and third cover.
On fractal, it lines up with first 2 covers

it doesnt matter. they are still a 8 pin. just that they cater such features so that when user upgrade their gpu at least still can use. (but u can even use 6 pin on a 8pin, but this depends on the gpu.)

squeeze the 6+2 into the 8. that's what i did too. it's 6+2 = 8 pin slot.

8 pin connectors are usually 6+2. You need to align the 6 pin and 2 pin parts together (there is a small slot) so that they are flush before inserting into the 8-pin slot.

what are mean is that the 6+2 is still consider a 8pins. but some of the gpu can allows just 6 pins connector on their 8pins slots. but most of the time best just follow their requirement.

PS. i cant find that links i have that time i was asking around if 6pins can work on 8pin slots.
