Any recommendation to which particular brand or model of network switch should I be getting? Planning to get a 8 port switch, mainly to connect to 2 computers, 2 android box and 4 IP camera.

Am I correct that I should be looking at gigabit switch as this is the fastest right now? I am currently using a D-Link DIR-890L router looking to expand the more ports for connection.

Any recommendation? I am hoping to get something which is less than S$180.

Network switches across brands dont really differ as it is a very simple hardware. Just get a gigabit switch to future proof it. The choice would largely be if you have a brand preference and design of it.

Thank you.

I am looking at either Linksys or D-link. Would prefer D-link since my router is from D-link as well. Not sure if this makes a difference.

Was browsing between DGS-108 (S$42) & DGS-1008P (S$109) from D-Link. The DGS-1008P gigabit switch comes with 4 PoE ports. Not sure what does this PoE ports does and do I really need these?

Any idea what does these PoE ports are mainly use for? Is there a need for home users?

You don't have to use the same brand as your router.

PoE stands for Power over Ethernet.
Basically it means the same network cable also supplies power to PoE-capable devices (i.e. power to the device comes from the switch, thru the network cable, no need for power adapter). Usually used to power devices like access points, cameras or phones.
If you don't use PoE devices, then you don't need a PoE switch.

For most people, poe is not needed. A 4-5 port switch is around $20-40. You can look at the sitex brochures to check out whats available and the pricing.

Thanks for the information.

Have narrow down to the following:

1. LINKSYS SE4008 WRT 8-PORT GIGABIT ETHERNET SWITCH - can't seems to find any retailer in Singapore selling this.
- 8 Gigabit Ethernet Ports
- Quality of Service (QoS)
- Auto-Sensing Ports maximize data flow rates of 10/100/1000 Mbps
- Advanced power-saving mode detects unused ports

2. D-Link DGS-108 8-Port Gigabit Desktop Switch In Metal Casing - S$42 (Sitex 2015)
- High-Speed Networking
- Intelligent Data Streaming
- Eco-Friendly and Economical

3. Am looking into Cisco as well but somehow I think they are for business used and more expensive as well.

Overall I feel that the Linksys and D-Link advantages are more or less the same just that they each phrase it in their own words.

Please be free to share or comments if you have any other recommendation. Cheers!

Tplink is same price lvl as dlink... yep linksys is the worst choice for switches. I've seen their prices at challenger being almost twice of dlink and tplink, with no value add in hardware at all.

Why you don't want connect this way?

ONT > Router > Switch > ps3, pc , etc

Due to a lan port my router and tv very far. The ONT next to TV but router far away. So I would like to do a 2 way split from the ONT to my router the other to switch.

If can split, we don't need to use routers. Just use switches.

After ONT, must have a routing capability.

I use TP link 8 port switch with dlink 868L ( provided by StarHub). I choose TP link because it is metal case and have mounting at the bottom to mount under my table.
