yup. since that non-AiMesh router can't participate in the mesh, turn it off and use it as a wired router.

But, since you mention old free, TP-Link router, you may have considered a more cost effective alternative.

you can do it by flashing OpenWRT on older routers (available for below $20 each on carousell). search for keywords like OpenWRT, mesh, in this forum.

OK! Thanks, will see if I can dig up an old router.

Finally getting my own place so need to get my own wifi 😂

M1 is offering XD6 at $13 a month for 24 months = $264. The cheapest XD6 I can find outside of M1 is $476, totally not worth it.

If I’m going to do proposal 1 I might as well top up a $100 to get the XT8.

strange pricing they have, but there may be some promo deals behind the scene

start with the compatibilty table: https://openwrt.org/toh/start

then search on this forum (quite a bit of resources here), go watch some youtube videos...... get a feel first if that's what you are comfortable with. hands-on, re-use and re-purpose, vs $$$ for new toys.

and, congrats on your new place

Lol I think the cheapest AI mesh option for me is to sign up with M1 for the XD6 (11X24=276) and buy the AX55 separately on Carousell (currently awash with people trying to offload their free M1 routers 😂) for about $120-140.

This AI mesh with ethernet backhaul option will only cost me about $400.

@Slavor

your welcome , see ? alot of response no ? :s13: =:p :o

but again, its your money and budget, please do what makes most sense

i believe is getting the best of the best

in ranking

- Ubiquity or similar
- Ax asus aimesh and combo
- lower tier aimesh
-etc

im the exact opposite from AMAT and

gregory_choo

as i would rather just xt8 personally,
1st node , at the living room, just extend the lan cable longer,

and the 2nd node just plug power near/ outside of bedroom 2, have them connect via wireless

[ again thats me, as im not earning your money, the easier it is for you, the better for everyone ]

as for the use case for xd 6 and xd 4 + ax55u , please really really have 2hrs , without anyone complaining the wireless network when you are gonna setup,

i dont foresee aimesh mucking up badly, then again, you need to update the firmware and tweak the wireless signal for xd6/ xd4s

Prosperous day to all Sensei's here.

I've tried to dive through all the posts and ended up confusing myself about getting ax55u and mesh and backhauls.

Can I please get abit of advice on how I can set up my network so that my wife will be happy?

New BTO so there are 5 LAN points already set up in the house (Labelled 1 to 5 in image)

I do regular zoom calls at the wired desktop point and my wife will gaming in the study as well.

Need decent connection for the wifi in the kitchen and the bedroom for casual surfing.

I'm going with whizcomms 1 gbs no frills plan.

One of my friends was sharing that I can get a ax86u (really expensive T.T) and place it at Point 3 saying that it will be enough for to ensure my rooms all get a decent WIFI connection. Is that right?

Or is there any other alternatives?

Much thanks!

No one can really guarantee that single router is good enough. However, the recommendation of Asus RT-AX86U as the main router is a good one. If it is not good enough say in the master room, then you can add a RT-AX55 in the master room. If that combination is above your budget, then you can use the combination of RT-AX58U+RT-AX55. But as this is your primary concern for life now and it is for your wife, I can not imagine that budget can be the main issue here. After all, it is not that expensive.

Connection -- (assuming you are not getting Singtel as it will use ONR and assume that Point 2 and 3 are close enough). You will need a cheap dumb switch like TP-Link TL-SG105 (below S$30)

1) ONT in DB Box -- Lan port 3 -- RT-AX86U/58U main router WAN port
2) Main router LAN port -- LAN port 2 -- TL-SG105 in DB box
3) TL-SG105 in DB Box -- room LAN ports 1/4/5
4) LAN port 5 -- optional RT-AX55 in master room if the main router is not good enough
5) Main router LAN port -- desktop in study
6) LAN port 1 -- smart TV or things like that

@mngbliiitz
as my own personal take :

ax86u is worth the money as a singly point, base off your diagram, it will work

however the placement i would rather go towards pulling a very long cable and slowly hug around the study room

via the blue lines, and then to the star point

even a ax82u might allow the connection, not fantastic, but enough to not buffer 4k

though, im reading the 1850, is in mm? aka 1.8m ?

btw, just my personal take, get m1 or MyRepublic, Whizzcomm seems like a hit or miss ISP [ afaik from the forums here ]

else like @xiaofan and the rest has suggested, the aimesh/ mesh with LAN cable , and really depends wheres the largest usage point, e.g who needs to zoom call and download 20mbps at the same spot, it needs to be "closer" to the router,

just my 2cents

why is there a need to update the firmware, and tweak the wireless signal?

I understand that one very obivous advantage of mesh wifi is that it is not necessary to tweat the wireless signal, unlike older generation APs.

HAHA yes. Budget is abit flexible suddenly when the wife comes into the picture.

Thanks for this, quite clear to me. All the -- are lan cables right.

Would it be better to buy pre-cut lan cables or head to simlim to get some custom made lengths? I assume CAT 6 is more than sufficient?

Yes not using Singtel.

I can try and take your recommendation to place it in the middle of the house. Do you know if I can ceiling mount the AX86 upside down, with the antennas pointing towards the floor? I can make my own brackets and stuff to hold it.

All measurements shown are in mm.

Ok i'll look into MyRepublic then as I had them in consideration too.

thanks!

I would not recommend MyRepublic. You may want to consider Starhub instead.

No IPv6
CGNAT unless you pay extra for static IP, no dynamic IP option
Asymmetric (upload speed is 50% of download speed)
Uncertain future - just acquired by Starhub so who knows if they will continue to exist as a standalone entity or if all their users will be migrated onto Starhub infra. Or they might continue to exist as a legacy brand, being gradually starved of resources etc...

Well unfortunately, the ax86u is really un-mountable unless you feel up to DIY, however for example, the xt8 does seem to have. https://www.amazon.sg/ZenWiFi-Whole-Home-Tri-Band-Bracket-HOLACA/dp/B08MDTRXSY

I won't recommend mounting the AX86U upside down. the passive cooling vertical design assumes cooler air enters at the bottom and is vented up via chimney effect.

Hello, thanks for letting me know, i'll scrub the idea to ceiling mount it for now then.

You signing up with Whizcomms, rite? if you want ONT, get written confirmation they will install a bridged ONR.

(you can still get it bridged, but you need to make a trip down, or pay for a sevice call)
OH. I'm already using Whizcomms and they gave me a ONR. I assumed that I can just connect it to my AX86U via LAN1 Port and it will work. Did you mean I was wrong. :(
