In an interview with Golem.de, Rory Read, CEO of Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., confirmed the abandonment of the Excavator architecture. Future Carrizo, Toronto and Beema APUs, the fourth generation of accelerated processors for tablets, ultrathins, notebooks, desktops and servers will all share a common, all-new, designed from scratch, power-oriented architecture.

The philosophy of this new architecture will be the same (but even more efficient) as the Athlon 64 FX: a relatively short pipeline which doesn’t reach very high frequencies but has a very high efficiency per MHz and per Watt. The original Bulldozer architecture long pipeline, which reaches high frequencies to the detriment of efficiency per cycles and which generates very power greedy CPUs should now be part of AMD past.

This information confirms rumours published by The Inquirer in 2013! The Carrizo, Toronto and Beema should be released from mid 2015.

"Short pipeline and high frequencies"? Good luck with that! That doesn't make any sense at all and goes into the total opposite architectural direction than Apple with their A7/A8 and NVIDIA with Denver.

At least the other camps all have some form of sane efficiency to start with, AMD bulldozer's efficiency can hardly be called efficiency

By then should be head on with Skylake.... highly doubt so.... They have to get to Sandy Bridge level efficiency before anything can be said....

To your original question: probably not in raw performance. Price, maybe.

Broadwell is the same than Haswell, it's just a die shrink. The only improvement will be Iris Pro for LGA-1150.

There won't be any new FX chip based on a new architecture in 2015.

To be honest, it will be really great if they are able to match Sandy/ Ivy Bridge performance. I feel Intel is starting to become complacent over time looking at the meagre performance improvement over the years after the release of Sandy Bridge.
