New PC Build

Hi folks,

totally lost touch with all the current in-technology both existing and upcoming. Basically current PC crash and die. Think no point to salvage also. Only existing HDD i wanna retain.

PC is general use of watching movies, youtube, web surfing etc. Very light gaming once in a while only as not a lot of time.

Thinking to go back PCT to buy all the parts/components since my stuffs have always been from them.

Can advise on the following specs?

CPU: Intel i5 10500 3.1ghz?
- not sure 10400 and 10500 diff much since price gap very small
Motherboard: Asus Prime B460 or Asrock B460 Pro 4?
- no clue what's the all key difference in these boards
Ram: G.Skill Ripjaws V 3000 CL16 2 x 8gb?
PSU: Corsair RM 650 Gold?
GPU: Recommendations? I have no idea needed or not. Maybe 1660?
Casing: Any i guess. Giving up my Fractal R3. Way too heavy and big

the intel system is way too expensive for such light use imo. i think u can consider asrock deskmini a300, is a really affordable case, psu, mobo, wifi all in one. just need to plop in apu (any ryzen apu will do, like ryzen 3 3200g or athlon 3000g, just look for the g or ge suffix), cooler, ram and storage.

I did not put too much thought into your budgeting. Hopefully things still falls into the correct price bracket. But your needs for more HDD is fulfilled with this chassis.

I'd suggest you use a NAS for storage rather than shoving multiple HDD into the system and have to opt for a bigger, more expensive chassis, all the while, accumulating more and more HDD along the way. My direct alternative choice of chassis vs NZXT H510 is Phanteks P400A or Lian Li Lancool series if you don't need so many HDD that is.

Seasonic a safer bet as they are the manufacturer of Corsair. Ryzen, well I guess is value/performance.

yeah, get a NAS that put the data from those 4 HDD to the NAS. It save quite a bit of space and you can choose a smaller case for your PC. Heck, you can even just get an Intel NUC or Asrock Deskmini coupled it with a NAS.

FD Ion+ is a Platinum rated instead of Gold, better efficiency. 10 years warranty.

Seasonic got 7 years warranty rather than 5 years from Corsair.

Ryzen is better value for money and better power efficiency at stock compared to newer Intel. If money is tight, drop the motherboard model to a B450 Tomahawk Max, which you can still upgrade to ryzen 4000 series when the time comes. The stock cooler while not superb, it's good enough to use whereas Intel stock cooler is a joke since the 4th gen.

Current 10th gen Intel only run PCIE 3.0. If you go for B550 (instead of B450), you got PCIE 4.0 ready for newer gen hardware like faster nvme SSD and GPU without needing to change the CPU.

Not say I hard sell AMD. I got no benefit doing so. But the advantage is clear as heck to me why AMD is a better platform, at least right now and they seem more future ready.

MSI motherboards reliable? Seems many is going for the tomahawk models

MSI tomahawk series is reliable for am4 series. Usually every different chipset will have different good models. I personally like the msi tomahawk board for b450/b550/x570 chipset. A decent balance of price and spec.

msi x570 boards are mostly quite bad though, except the tomahawk and unify.
