New PC keeps freezing permanently

Hi,

I assembled a new PC not too long ago from SLS and these are my specs.

CPU + MOBO: i5 6500 + MSI BAZOOKA B150M
SSD: SSD Samsung evo 250 gb
RAM: Kingston ValueRAM DDR4-2133 8GB
HDD: Reusing a SATA2 as storage/backup
GFX: No GFX, using native
PSU: Reusing a Andyson F650

I'm experience a lot of freezing with my PC in which it hangs forever. This has happened when I'm surfing on chrome, watching youtube, playing dota. hence I cant really identify or isolate the problem.

I did suspect that my RAM was causing the problem since I did a diagnostic using windows 10 tool. The ram have since been replaced but the problem seems to be coming back again and more frequently. I have also did a clean and complete format/reinstallation for Windows 10

can anyone teach me how to diagnose the problem is coming from ? or if its a software problem ?

Hi, can you try removing your HDD (provided is not a OS drive) and see? In your windows explorer, can you navigate to your HDD smoothly? Any lag or slowdown in reading from HDD?

no noticeable lag especially after I've changed to sata 3. old HDD started producing clicking sound, faster change out after that

hmmm....definitely more than 5 years. is there anyway if i can diagnose if its PSU problem ? usually the freeze/crash happens when I scroll more excessively on youtube

i obviously don't have same specs as you. But I also am having the same issues. Problems seems to arise only after last month's win10 update.
did you happen to update win10 when you fresh installed, then the problem comes back?

care to describe when would the freeze happen and how is it like ?

mine would freeze when I'm trying to load up dota 2, when I'm scrolling on videos on youtube or somtimes when I use chrome. The whole PC just freeze at that particular screen for good.

I installed a fresh copy of Win10 when I first got my system. and shortly after the problem came about and I thought it was malware but after a few reformats I thought it was the RAM when it showed up as a bad ram problem in Windows 10 Self diagnostics. I then change then ram and did a fresh format. Everything was ok until the freezing problem started and became more and more frequently.

I'm worried that it will reach a point of freeze seconds after boot up. which was what happened the last time.

check your power rating in the Bios page and screenshot it.

Hi I was referring to your spare hdd. The one u wrote as spare, not the SSD.

If TS hasn't updated BIOS might want to try it out. You can lookup the skylake freeze bug which was rectified by a BIOS update.

sounds like a problem i encounter too.. occasionally just freeze for a few seconds. i just now searched for remedy, trying out this, so far so good, will keep noted.

go to power options > edit plan settings > change advanced power settings > turn off hard disk after: Settings minutes (XX)

change to Never or 0, both are the same. my previous was 10 minutes. now is never.

the freeze happens at random during chrome/youtube/dota2/games, and would just stay at the screen for good too. Quite annoying. Sometimes it doesn't happen for a few days, sometimes multiple times a day.

did you do any win10 update prior to the freezing?

i had this problem in win 10. turns out it was a faulty hdd. but sometimes win 10 will have this problem too when the internet connection is unstable.

hmmm.. so switching out the faulty hdd solved it? maybe i should do the same to mine. I have 1 wd green with a lot bad sectors, but lazy to change it...

These 2 sound like hardware acceleration issues. A browser or graphics driver update might help. Not everyone's issue on this thread might point to the same cause.

not so sure though.. for me, even surfing hwz forum can cause it to happen. but then, I'm open for any solution, if it isn't that troublesome. lol

long time ago i exp random hard freezes due to bad wifi driver, card was released during xp days, then win7 had problems...

Hi TS, you might want to try the following fix, which is what i did for my win10 + skylake setup.

Turn off c-state (under advanced bios settings).

Seems like skylake have stability issues with some batch of mobos regarding c-state switching
