Hello everyone. Planning to upgrade my existing PC (specs on the side) to a new one over the next week and couldn't decide between a Ryzen 5 1600 or the coffee lake i5 8400. Or is the CPU too overkill? Mainly use for surfing, gaming LoL and CSGO at 24" 1080p max settings. Budget would be about 1.4k including case. Planning to get my items from PC themes

I really like the Corsair RGB 460X case that I plan to purchase and put on my desk. So maybe I would settle my case on that which is about 230.

I will be settling aside perhaps another 250 for mechanical keyboard and new mouse. Appreciate your recommendations for this as well.

Will be reusing my SSD, HDD, Speakers, 24" Monitor and hyper 212 Cpu cooler. No need OS as well.

Thank you guys for the inputs in advance.

Out of the box, the i5-8400 should give better single core performance than stock R5 1600.

If you multitask a lot, and/or are willing to OC, the R5 1600 will give better price/perf. The hyper 212 is more than enough for a moderate OC.

If you get the ryzen 1600, it comes with stock cooler which is quite capable.

If you are getting the i5 8400, its not really worth it if you pair with Z370 motherboards. Only Z370 motherboards are available at the moment and the i5 8400 is a locked CPU.

ryzen 1600 with a B350 motherboard will set you back around $500 at least. Better value for money compared to intel.

If you go for a 1500x you'll get faster game performance.

Your specs look very decent and will certainly run the things that you listed without any problems. I see no reason to upgrade for now.

If you really must, for now I will recommend getting Ryzen. It is more affordable if you consider bundling it with a B350 board. In terms of performance, I don't think the R5 1600 is much slower than the i5 8400.

If budget is an issue, g4560 will do the job for your requirements. Or i3 8gen also good enough.

Oh my pc is having some issues. Sometimes when startup having blank screen but the computer is still running. Other times when it managed to post into desktop, it freezes and auto restart when I run games. I tried running furmark load and it immediately freezes and auto restart. I suspect is GPU or PSU dying... Or it could be both.

You should try using the integrated graphics to see if the same problem persists. If it is really the graphic card, then just replace the graphic card. Graphic card is reusable, so if you do upgrade your rig sometime in the near future, you can port it over.

Personally, I feel the price between the 1500X and the 1600 is too close to recommend the 1500X. This is my observation when I search up online shops like Qoo10 and Lazada. Performance is significantly better on the 1600.
