New PC (looking for HW RAID controller too)

Time to upgrade my PC.

Last PC built in 2011. Rather rusty with the new consumer technologies.

Also quite fed up with the IRST "RAID" provided by Intel MB. This SW RAID can chew up CPU time unlike a independent RAID card.

Spend almost half hour being entertained by davidtwk and wallacetan on the HW and SW RAID debate. lol. I want to have HW RAID controller to run RAID 1 only, any advise?

Anyone, need the gurus here to advise if the spec below is good to go, esp the RAID portion?

CPU: Intel i5-4570 3.2Ghz 4Core 4Thread 6Mb L3 LGA1150
MB: MSI H87-G43
MEM: G-Skill RipJawX 1600Mhz CL9 8Gb kit
GPU: MSI GTX760 TwinFroze Gaming 2Gb
ODD: Samsung SH-224 24x DvD+-RW Box
SSD: Samsung 128Gb SSD840 Pro (Quite a luxury i would think)
HDD: 2 x WD Blue (reliability boleh?)
RAID: really no clue..
PSU: FSP 550W Aurum 92+ Platinum (Error: Page Not Found)
CASE: Looking around for easy maintenance + good air flow.

Budget is around $1500 before the RAID controller. Reusing anything not inside the new box. OS and software to reuse since they are on retail license.

Thanks in advance. :s22::s22::s22:

(Edited to remove old PC sale)

From the build you show seems like you know your stuff eh. If got the budget just go for it.
If you want more reliability then go for WD Red.

But does your motherboard support RAID on your extra drives only? Cause not all chipset can run RAID and AHCI together.

Thanks shadow84 and iKoori.

iKoori, pardon my laziness. what do you mean by the extra drives cannot run RAID and AHCI? i plan to use SSD as the OS primary while the HDD running on RAID will be the data volume.

Yes, H87 supports RAID but if i want to use HW RAID controller card instead of the MB onboard SW RAID, anyone has recommendations? i use only RAID 1.

Upgrade your current rig with a SSD and a raid card and a graphic card with 8GB rams and i bet the you won't feel the diff between a 2500K and a 4570.

Hi royfrosty,

Not sure if H87-G43 available in SLS. Any similar model? I don't mind Z87-G43 but seems like overkill when i don't OC.

Serious?
GPU with 8Gb is expensive la.

i reckon you recommend just to top up with SSD and RAID card at least? Any help on RAID controller? So far, unless its amazon, not sure where in SLS sell these RAID controllers.

I believe he meant getting a GPU and 8gb of ram sticks... There is no such GPU with 8gb VRAM...

Only e33 is available no g43 for h87.

So far you can try h87m 4 Asrock.

Both H87M-G43 and H87-G43 gaming are available in PCT. (Just looked at the price list :D)

Because IMO, 2500K is still pretty fast and usually the biggest improvement you going to see it's having a SSD than going for a cpu upgrade.

Of cos if u die die want the newer chipset, then maybe the bros here like royfrosty can recommend u further.

Thanks shadow84, reppps and guys.

Now I have 2 options, to get new rig or to upgrade. Time to sleep over it.

One thing I'm still looking for, RAID controller. Appear that not many still awake now. -)

Back to topic. Actually the current rig is still good. The best way is like what I think you need is an ssd

Thanks all.
Whether a not i upgrade part or the whole PC, will decide only after finding a HW RAID controller.
