Hey there!

I am currently thinking of building a PC, most preferably below $1.5k (but my absolute max is $1.75k).

I'm going to mostly use this PC as a work/gaming PC. The games I play are mostly open world kind (GTA V, Fallout 4, etc) or grand strategy games (EU4, HoI3 etc). So, I am unsure if the i5 is enough for those kind of games, since they are most likely going to be CPU intensive (well, to be fair, I am not so sure).

Apart from that, no OC or any weird things that would warrant those higher-end parts/CPU cooler.

Here is what I have in mind:

CPU/Mobo: i5-6500 with Asus H170 Pro - $500 (PCT)
GPU: Asus GTX 970 Turbo 4G - $505(+$4) (Lazada, without discounts)
RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 2400 (4Gx2) - $120 (PCT)
SSD: EVO 850 250GB - $128.50 (Lazada)
HDD: WD Blue 1TB - $77 (PCT)
PSU: Superflower Leadex 550W Silver - $119 (PCT)
Casing: Corsair 200R Window - $95 (PCT)

Total: $1,544.50

Is there anything wrong with this set up? Is the PSU good enough (in terms of wattage and the make)? :p FYI, I do have monitors and everything else. I am also thinking of ditching the RAM for Kingston RAM, but the price seem negligible (diff about $40).

Yes the i5 is good enough. Gaming is always about the GPU nowadays. GTX 970 is good.

Not sure about this but I think it's better to get a stick of 8GB RAM than 2x4GB...

The Samsung 850 Evo 120GB is USD$77.99 @ Amazon cheaper than Lazada.

The rest let the experts advise u =:p

Samsung 850 evo is $129 @Lazada

No OC just get value ram will do... Kingston Value ram ddr4 8gb @ $84

GPU maybe can get from Lazada, do consider palit gtx970 jetsteam...usually can get it @ $470 with some discount on lazada...the Asus gtx970 turbo is blower type design like those reference card style

Cut mobo to Asrock (save ~$40)
Cut GPU to Zotac/Palit (save ~$20)

Anything that isn't Asus will save you money

Yup definitely would recommend palit or zotac in place of A$u$. Performance better while at a lower cost compared to that model. Another way to go would also be get from amazon cus much cheaper. Bought my ssd and ram from amazon 2-3months back and no prob so far. Some prices for the hardware still on a bit of discount from black Friday and cyber Monday if I not wrong can do some exploring there.

Thanks for the advice everyone!

I'll consider Palit/Zotac for GPU, however, I don't know how the RMA works for these brands here.

By the way, if buy from Amazon, which parts will have warranty? Is it betting on the fact that RAM and SSD would most likely to not be RMAed?

Anyway, is Superflower PSU an okay brand/model?

yup it is a pretty good brand. (i am using it)
Amazon wise you would have to rma it to the country directly via mail. I recommended Ram and SSD as they are very unlikely to spoil.
