hi guys!
Need to build a rig
1) word processing
Office and Adobe
2) data storage
Thinking of raid 1(auto backup important documents)
3) prefer built in graphics card

This rig will act as a storage for files then my other comps will access the files on this comp thru the network.
Can anyone advise. Thx!!
Hope to settle all at one place.
Cheers! TIA!

This rig, will it be a file server of sorts or will it be also doing word processing as well?

If you just want a file server, a cheap NAS will also do.

So, you still want a file server or word processor can already?

A cheap D-Link DNS-320L NAS can be had for as low as $174, but must also buy HDD yourself. Got 2 HDD bays for your HDDs and RAID 1 array.

CPU+ Mobo: ASROCK H97M-PRO4 + i3 4160 (301)
RAM: CRUCIAL/G.SKILL PC 12800/1600MHZ DDR3 CL11 VALUE RAM (4GB) (50)
SSD: PLEXTOR M6S 128GB (99)
HDD: 2X WD 6TB RED (750)
DVD-RW: LG 24X DVD-RW SATA OEM (25)
PSU: FSP AURUM S 500W (89)
Case: CM K282 / K350 / K380 (55)
OS: WINDOWS 7 HOME PREM (120)

Total cost: $1489

Buy at PC Themes, #04-15, and ask for discounts. DIY yourself. If you can't into DIY, get PC Themes to assemble for you for a fee.

Notes:

1) An i3 4160 is chosen so that there is negligible performance effects on word processing performance while files are being transferred in the background.

2) The Asrock H97M-Pro4 comes with RAID support and Intel Gigabit LAN for improved networking. Comes with 2X PCI-E X16 slots so that you can add 2X RAID cards if you want to add more SATA slots in the future.

3) Not sure how much files you are going to put in your file server, WD 6TB Reds are used as WD Reds are designed to be used in a NAS/RAID setup.

4) Since this is meant to be used as a file server, the FSP Aurum S PSU is used to ensure maximum reliability.

5) The CM K series of casings has 7 3.5'' HDD bays to allow you to add more HDDs in the future.

It is recommended, but not a must. Can also use other HDDs for a RAID array if you want, just not WD Greens HDDs.

Do note that the costs of the HDDs on the build are 2X WD 6TB HDDs. Can opt for smaller capacities if you do not need so much space.

Not very sure of the differences between NASes of different brands, but they should be usable for basic data storage.

I mean, what use is a NAS if it can't store your data properly?
