New rig, questions about OS?

Tomorrow morning, heading down to sls to complete my rig components and build.

I'm fine with both Win 7 and 8, but 8 would be better, really want to try 8.1..

So here's the question, Win7 selling at ~$120, Win 8 higher than that.
But if I get Windows 8 STUDENT UPGRADE(Note, it is an upgrade version not system builder), will I still be able to do a clean install on my brand new that I'm getting?

Because I heard many people doing clean installs so as long as I can download the .iso file and get it in a disk/usb drive, will the UPGRADE KEY work the same as buying the OEM System builder itself?

I have done MANY google searches but found no definitive answer. Some were saying that it SHOULD be used for a computer that already has windows installed to be able to use the upgrade, but others were saying that microsoft relies this on customer individual integrity and that the pkey for the Upgrade version and Retail/OEM system builder sold in stores works the same way?

Student offer only $90 for Windows 8 PRO, while Windows 8 OEM is probably $150++ at least.


Any help would be greatly appreciated.

it can work. just dont connect to internet at all until you have changed a certain registry key. during setup any key u enter (upgrade/full) will be accepted. anyway rmb to set bios to uefi mode!

Student upgrade is not a full version type. Is still under oem. Just like in my nyp days. The msdnn people told me anything that I get for student rate will only be an oem version.

If you look carefully in sls there are some shops that sells win8 cheaper or conparable with win7. One of them is bizgram. And pro or home no difference. Unless you want a windows server login account then most probably you will need pro.

And btw the upgrade key once installed in the mobo. And lets say your mobo died. If you get back the same mobo or after service it is still fine.

If you change the mobo. The upgrade key goes along with the old mobo. You got to call microsoft to help you activate it.

What I felt is that you might be better off to buy the 1 time windows 8 cd. Rather then you buy a win7 and then buy the win8 upgrade pack.

Can try at Best Buy, last I checked, off bundle OEM price is $118.
Nothing wrong with Windows 8 on my side, apps and games run perfectly fine. A bit of a learning curve to navigate the new start screem though.

I still contemplating between win 8 and 7 although now I already dressing up to leave and go sls
But then again, like no point getting older os?
