Hi all, planning to overhaul my 11yr old rig

Would like to know which component of my current rig can I salvage

1) Choosing Zotac is a good choice due to long warranty period, which is very important due to GPU shortage.

2) The Scythe Fuma 2 cooler, please ensure with distributor got backplate for it or not.

3) Monitor must upgrade. Even apple gamers are gaming @ 120 Hz already on their iPhone.

4) 12600KF PC Dreams sell for $395 only. Not sure why the listings are so little and more markup than usual on our e-commerce platforms.

Please note that current Scythe Fuma 2 that are available in Singapore may not come with the LGA1700 mounting kit by default. They just recently announced a revision B that may take some time to reach our shores. So you need to consider the cost of the mounting kit, which is currently being sold separately by the distributor, or you may have to request a free mounting kit directly from Scythe. For an i5 12600K, you can consider the cheaper ID Cooling SE-226XT, which I think you should be able to find on Shopee for around 55 bucks with no RGB fans. It is a decent cooler for the asking price. Originally used it with my 12700K, but decided to change to an AIO water cooler. Do note that the fan noise can be a little annoying, but noise is subjective from person to person.

If you don't need the iGPU, get 12700F instead, which is one of the better value CPUs.

Unfortunately, Galahad 240mm costs 3x the price and performs worse than Fuma 2 in terms of noise normalized thermals. Better look at the other ones instead. Don't make sense to pay more for less.

I actually don’t think Galahad is that good. For CLC coolers with RGB lighting, I think it looks decent. But there are reports of pump whine at high pump speed. I originally wanted to order the 360mm version, but decided to just stick with Arctic Liquid Freezer II. Also before buying any cooler for LGA 1700, it is prudent to always check with the seller if the mounting kit is provided, unless it is already stated on the description. Most sellers would have the mounting kits, but if you don’t ask, they may not provide since it does not come with LGA 1700 support in the first place.

Seems like can get from shopee at $15. Do I need to get my own thermal paste or use the preapplied one?

Personally would always choose more core over a better mobo. Which is 12700f + msi pro b660m-a.

Igpu is just for backup, up to you to, personally think it's worth getting a backup just incase gpu down.

Read carefully they list the conditions, call them if you need clarification, the most transparent is dynacore pricelist, needs to add +15 if only getting mb + cpu.

I agree. So if given the 3 choices, I won’t bother to consider option 1, which is the 12600KF. The price difference is very small, and it can be helpful to have an iGPU, not just from a troubleshooting perspective, but you’ll never know when you will need it.

i would go with 12700 instead of the F... with the concern of troubleshooting compare to losing 1~2 FPS.

If you are using a motherboard with decent build, and not overclocking, and/ or, getting an i9, then you don’t have to worry about overheating VRMs. When you use CLC water cooler, temp for VRM tend to be higher as compared to an air cooler, unless there’s a dedicated VRM fan like the Arctic Liquid Freezer II. Even if they run hotter, it should not be like critical temps.

3 is the most value, cos when u buy a z series board the value diminishes already.

If you want good value, you can buy the MSI PRO B660M-A Wi-Fi instead, it got a good VRM and VRM heatsink. You can pair it with the CPU of your choice.

If you want even better value, need wait for the mobo prices to drop, cos the markup at the moment is crazily excessive.

Anyway, when GPU die, will show symptoms first.. like crashing and blackout or artifacts.. Very rarely to have instant death. If you need absolute uptime on your system with backup iGPU then get non F. Otherwise, don't bother.

Quite important. You want to get the most out of your money.

MSI PRO B660M-A Wi-Fi got a very good VRM and VRM heatsink, it drive 12900K with no PL on stock to full performance. But i would go with 12700K max to avoid stressing it too hard. You can imagine how it works now.

I feel you should leave the settings as is, i.e. don’t bother limiting it. Like I mentioned, if you don’t get cheap and poorly build boards, throttling or overheating is quite unlikely. Assuming the board really can’t handle the chip, it will auto throttle anyway. So don’t limit it, unless there is a very strong reason to do it.
