Hi guys,

As the thread title says, the new rig is primarily for FPS games, light work, movies and browsing. I'm spending a bit more on this new rig, specs as follows:

CPU: Intel Core i5-8600K + Asus ROG STRIX Z370-F GAMING
GPU: Asus Strix GTX 1080 Ti OC 11GB
SSD: Samsung 970 Evo NVMe PCIe M.2 500GB
HDD: Toshiba 4TB (for storage)
RAM: VENGEANCE RGB 16GB (2 x 8GB) DDR4 DRAM 3200 C16
PSU: EVGA 750 G3
Cooler: CRYORIG H7 Quad Lumi
Chassis: Fractal Design Define R6 TG (black or gunmetal)
Monitor: ASUS ROG SWIFT PG279Q 27"

Really appreciate any comments on the above build. Anything that's a red flag or poor choice, please let me know.

Thanks in advance.

Good choice - just remember that if you buy the GPU and RAM locally, expect to pay 40% more.

Might be worth the tiny risk to just buy from overseas.

Thanks! I don't have much experience buying PC parts from overseas. Any recommendations? Appreciate it.

Would absolutely recommend you to go for i7 8700k if you can afford it. For light works, you won't feel much difference between NVME and SATA so imo go for SATA.

If you don't mind camping amazon, sometimes the prices can be competitive for GPU, especially if you are looking at 1080ti(s), but take into account conversion rate and warranties.

Thanks! It's about another ~150 for the i7 8700k. I've the impression the i5 8600k is really value for money, over the i7 8700k. I stand corrected.

TLDR: stick to the i5, DUMP the 1080ti and get a 1050/1050 ti or even a 970. You dont need a 1080 ti to play CS..... ie. dont buy a Ferrari to drive as a uber-car

Imo since you mentioned light work and some light gaming(TBH even AAA games dont need a strong cpu as they're GPU-intensive), I dont see a reason to baller out and go for an i7. Its a leisure PC, NOT a high-demand work PC.

The i5 8600K, especially if you overclock it is more than powerful that you'll literally see NO difference in performance for what you're gonna use it for, and blow an additional 150 sgd. You're essentially paying 150$ and seeing zero returns. The i5 8600K is future-proof enough, you're not a scientist, and you dont need a super-computer lol. The additional 150$ is still alot of money.

And if you're not planning to game heavily in 4k or 4k VR, which means even more cash on a huge 4k screen, dump the 1080ti. You only mentioned light usage and FPS game which even a GTX 960 can handle no problem. The 1080 ti you're loading into that pc is VERY overpowered for your stated usage and again, you're wasting your money and will see no good returns on it.

I'm kinda confused here. You're stating VERY light gaming and usage as your reqs but your parts selection is as if you want to build a super-gaming computer that's more suited for heavy content-creation/work and VR capabilities. Understand that you'd wanna pamper yourself, but you're really gonna blow alot of unncecessary money and see nothing in return.

If that's the case, getting the i5 8400/8500 makes more sense? The ability to OC yields minimal performance difference and it's not worth to spend so much for extra 5 fps tops in game. Not much difference in non-gaming works as well.

The i7 however be it the oc-able i7 8700k or the non oc-able i7 8700 makes much more sense as you actually get more performance for what you are paying for in non-gaming works.

All in all, i5-8600k makes the worst sense money wise as it's stuck in no man's land - not good enough to compete against the i7s, performance are pretty much the same as regular i5s and yet more expensive. Check out the benchmarks, they speak for themselves.

I'm playing mostly FPS like Tomb Raider, AC Origins, GTA, FF, BF etc. I've not been able to play these on my current PC.

Benchmarks do favour i7 though for mainly gaming purposes the reviews do suggest i5 has the biggest value for money. Your comment helped me to re-evaluate the i7 because I don't often upgrade my PC and the new rig is also for my 2 other kids to do their work, besides gaming for myself.

Just get an i7 and at least a 1080ti if u playing AAA titles on at least a 1440p monitor.

so that means u probably wont be able to use the PC much :p

den its still value oriented to go for Ryzen r5 or intel i5.

Those games aren't FPS other than BF :s22:

Very overpowered specs. Like the Ferrari equivalent of PC.
Specs are more suited to heavy workload.
But it's your money and it's fine (compatibility and bottleneck wise) if you want to splurge.

+1 to what trunkss1 said. I stand corrected on the i5 choice. Still, unless you're gonna be gaming in 4k or using VR, drop the 1080ti. You'd be spending ALOT of unnecessary money on thin air.

GTA, tomb raider, AC are all classified as AAA(high-demand) games, not fps games.

The monitor you proposed is a 1440p, 165hz monitor so I'll just assume you'd want to game heavily at 1440p. In that case 1080 or a 1070ti is more than sufficient. 1080ti is overkill unless you're into 4k gaming.

I beg to differ. I feel that 1080ti is able to drive 1440p close to 144hz at very high or max settings on most AAA games. That said, there are rumors that the gtx 11xx will be released this year so maybe TS could hold on to his decision to go for 1080 ti.

If however ts is planning to game at 1440p 60hz, then sure by all means go for 1070ti/1080

I agree it's an overkill on the specs. I've to admit my 10-yr-no-upgrade and not able to play most AAA/FPS games affected my rationality :)

I'm hoping the new rig will last me some time, I don't plan on upgrading every 3-4 yrs. But your comments help bring back some rationality, thanks, I'm taking time to consider.

Appreciate your comments. I do want to push refresh rate to the max on max settings. I'd wait for prices to drop further but I'm getting this new rig during the time my wife and kids are on 2 week vacation :s13:

Yes, these are AAA games, my bad. Not really into 4k gaming for now but will like to get into VR and high refresh rates. I guess my inner gaming beast has been locked up in the basement for too long.

980 ti is able to drive 1440p also, its somewhere between a gtx 1060 and a 1070. i use this late Nov 2014 PC built (upgrade GPU and Monitor along the way 2015 - 2016, I7 4790k + MSI 980 ti+ Acer Predator Xb271hu 1440p 144hz monitor). Still going strong in 2018. 980 Ti is the most underrated card since the launch of Pascal GPU series.
