New rig to replace my 5 year old pc

Hi all, I'm just about putting the components together and would like your feedbacks if this will turn out right or is there a better alternative. I'm basically building a pc that would last me for the next 5 years as have my previous pc. I'm leaning towards Asus components which has previously served me well.

These are the components:

Intel I7 6700K CPU
Asus Z170 Maximus VIII Hero Alpha motherboard (any better/cheaper/ alternative for this?)
Asus GTX 1080 Strix Gaming 8GB x 2 (would this be too overkill?)
Gskill Ripraw DDR4 3200 16gb (2 x 8gb)
Samsung EVO 850 SSD 500GB
Fractal Design R5 Casing
Coolermaster V850W 80 Gold
Corsair H115i 280mm extreme performance

I have received a quote for about $4600 for the above and $3400 with only 1 graphics card, is this reasonable?

Totally off balance and it could be irrelevant if you dont know what you are going to do with this PC.

Thanks for the enlightenment! I don't really remember the current specs of it but I can vaguely remember its an i5 750 on a asus motherboard with around 8 gb of ram. using a asus gtx 640 if I can remember correctly.

If you don't do overclock, this system is so so so overkill. Even if you overclock and use for gaming, would still be super overkill.

Since you have such a high budget, I would suggest you wait a little bit more for amd zen and Intel kabylake and nvidia gtx1080ti. Then decide again what you want.

Such a setup round up to about near 1k per year of spending if you expect the pc to last 5 years and it does.

Do you even need so much horse power?

Spending more =/= future proofing your pc. Neither does it mean that it will last long in terms of reliability. Putting in 2 graphics card with no higher resolution monitor is also plain useless and totally under utilize.

If thats the case, i'm sure you dont even need a high end rig in the first place.

6700K @ stock 4Ghz will last you for very long.
Mobo just stick to your fav Asus Z170.
Graphic card just get a single GTX1080 will do.
Memory just get any DDR4 2400Mhz, 2x8GB will do.
SSD/storage/casing up to you.
PSU can consider corsair rmi series or superflower brand.

Seriously, if you want to buy now, just buy. There is NO point waiting for AMD zen or intel 7000 series. Their performance increase is not going to prolong your so call "last me 5 yrs" to "7 or 8 yrs". 5 yrs later that AMD zen and 7000 series will perform just like a 6000 series.

Ok I admit, its a vanity issue. It was so painful the last time not being able to run games at high settings that came out 6 months after I build a mid range pc years ago.

Then swap out 2 1080s for a single 1080 will do, take that excess money and go for a 27inch 1440p 120hz/144hz monitor would be a better choice.

SSD go for 500gb for all your games and other kind of applications, with 1tb or more depending on what you wanna store, such as movies, musics and photos.

PSU just go for 550w to 600w range PSU, brands like:

- Seasonic X, P, Prime series
- Corsair AXi, RMi, HXi series
- Superflower Leadex Gold, Silver series

RAM would be 2400mhz 2x8gb will do.

Lastly casing would be your personal choice.

Most general consumers, or rather casual users will go for chipset H110 or B150 and for some whom wants RAID features will go for H170 instead. Only people whom are enthusiast, or wants every single ounce of "cant be seen" performance, then only they will go for a K chip with a Z170 and slot in 2 graphics card and pair it with a high res gaming monitors such as 3440 by 1440 monitor, and 4k resolutions.

Else mostly will just stay at B150 chipset. If you don't see the needs of all those nit gritty features such as overclocking, SLI/XFire, RAID, Type C usb, m.2 PCIE, and other tiny features, then even a H110 or B150 will do the job.

Thanks for your patience and enlightenment. I would love the choice of being able to do SLI in the future should the need arises. Always nice to have that option.

ah. den like this u still really need yo get z170 board. even though now not many games support sli and even if have probably not much difference.

well u can try finding some h170 with sli features.

lastly wait for kabylake out den buy.
